I have stopped talking about what I do here to my family. When they come to eat here I don't say anything about the food. If they don't like it they don't have to eat it, right?
I am getting ready to order some meat birds too. I have some people who want to buy them when they are all wrapped up ready for the freezer. I just need to figure out how much to charge for them. I will be letting them free range up front. By the time they are ready to come out to eat grass, they are too big to fly over the fence. And they will ahve plenty of room to graze.
I wish you luck with yours. And I do not mind the butchering at all. I have a home made plucker. It really helps alot. But I need another person to help with it.

I wanted to do meat birds this year, but hubby grew up on a dairy farm and they did their own every year and he said he just wasn't interested in ever doing that again. We love chicken. I would so much rather have raised our own.

I had to giggle at your post - the chicken "snobs". Some people can be so annoying. Drives me nuts when people want to be so far removed from their food. I think you said it best in your post. Doing what you can for where you are right now, and that's all that matters. :)

I try to raise some meat birds every year...this year I only got ducks and turkeys..some ducks will be ready to harvest soon and turkeys later. When I do chickens I have those friends who help with butchering to get a couple to feed their families and I have others who turn up their nose at the whole idea. I have lived here in this house 9 years and my nearest neighbor didn't realize that I butcher chickens every year...I keep it sorta quiet I guess. I can't imagine not trying to raise all I can here myself though.

Ain't nobody's business but my own what I do with my garden and livestock. Cornish cross birds are no more genetically-modified than any other livestock that has been bred for certain traits, theirs being fast growth and broad breasts. It's amazing what people get their knickers twisted over.

Yeah, I've got my meat birds planned out more or less, and I'm not going to tell company whether dinner had a name or if it came from the back yard or the safeway unless they ask me directly.

we have raised meat birds for over 20 years. we love the cornish cross. last year i saved a few of the good shaped ones. i now have about 6 hens that are cornish but healthy and strong and grown. they lay their eggs. i take them and put under a sexlink to hatch for me. she raises them till i am ready to separate mom and chicks. then we grow them out for butcher. i am proud of how we raise our food and butcher our own. so happy days and good eats at your house sherrrye
