Definitely the bar. It is clean and easy to read and the picture pops more without the "clutter."

Definitely without the bar!
As another note, I also like that MaryJane is looking at us once again on the next cover. The last two covers haven't been appealing to me at all, since Meg's eyes were completely covered by the brim of the cap in the J/J issue and MaryJane's is turned away from us on the A/S cover. It just seems so impersonal, like we are intruding on the person in the picture and they don't want us there. Those two covers were missing the sort of personal connection with the reader that I have always known and loved from MJ magazine covers.
The side bars may also have something to do with that, I do feel they make the cover very block-like and rigid, whereas the covers without the sidebars seem more creative, open, and (forgive me!) organic. :)
Mary :)

I like the bar as it is easier to read the text.

I love the art of your cover without the bar but I have to admit, the bar really catches my attention to what is inside. I vote to keep the bar

I vote for no bar. I like the full page photo. I read the magazine cover-to-cover regardless of what the type says on the cover.

I prefer the covers without the bar because it allows for larger background photos.

I like it with the bar. I don't buy the magazine for the front cover photo, I buy it for the awesome articles inside! The bar makes it easier to read.

I like without the bar. For some reason I can't put my finger on, the bar looks more artificial. Without looks more professional and I have the impression that I will find a better value within the pages of the old designs. It also looks artsier and more approachable.

I like it both ways but without the bar a little better. Not even sure why.

The pictures are gorgeous and I think that with the bar makes it easier to see at a glance what articles are in the magazine.

I vote for the bar because it is easier to read. While I do enjoy the full photo without the bar then sometimes the text gets lost or I full ruins the photo. Perhaps the full photo could be in also inside for those who enjoy seeing the full photo? I also know that since the bar text stands out some people who are just passing magazines it will catch their eye more. I have that happen a lot I will see a word and then look back to shift thru the magazine. Then 8 out of 10 I end of purchasing it.

Much easier to read with the bar, and really highlights what is in the issue.

I have to say I like it without the bar. The cover "flows" better...it looks to cluttered with the bar and without you can still see what is inside the cover. I think without the bar "fits" better.

My vote is with the bar. Readers' eyes can scan down the information more quickly. It looks efficient (just like a farmgirl!), and is very easy to access the information. The information in the pictures below, while being very homey, are harder to "find" the information as the eyes need to scan all over the magazine. To put it bluntly, the "in your face" boldness of the bar advertizing of the subjects that are inside the magazine may attract a wider variety of readers.
