I'd search Craigslist for hens, and I'd try posting a wanted ad on Cheapcycle or freecycle to see if anyone has any. I know I've got 9 chickens that will be laying late winter/spring that I'd love to sell to someone! Nobody's buying right now. I'd check with my local famers market, too.

PS. Hatcheries will NOT send older chicks-they send NEW chicks that have just hatched since they can survive 24-48 without food/water. They wouldn't survive mailing.

Check with the 4H office to see if/when they have their auction of chickens. We got our last ones there. Cutest little boy had raised them. We bought the blue ribbon winners and probably paid a little more for them than we should have but he was just so dang proud of them I could not resist. They were Rhode Island Reds. They were laying within a month of purchase. As long as you can recognize a healthy chicken you can do well there. Connie
