I have been asking this question on my blog and facebook a couple of times and would love to hear from my MJ Sisters...
I have lived my whole 52 years of life in Colorado and have been really thinking that this might be the time in life for something really different. So I really need some help to start the process.
Have you lived in another country??? What did you like and dislike about it?? Have you been wishing to live in another country after the kids have grown and gone? Has there been a spot in the world that has been calling you and you do not know why???
Please help me start looking outside the box. I have started meditating on it, praying on it and reading a bit but the brain is in overload so would love to hear your thougts... THANKS in advance for sharing - love my sister's great ideas.

If I could live anywhere in the world, it would be in Provence, France. I visited there and fell in love with the area. That said, as long as I am on a farm, in the country, with my critters, I am truly happy :-D so you could plunk me down almost anywhere!

My hubby and I were born and raised in St. Louis MO,left when we were 19 years when he joined the Army. We have lived in Oklahoma, Kentucky, Georgia and Germany. While in Germany we traveled all over as it was so easy. We have been to France, Austria, Switzerland, England and Lictenstein. We have traveled through many states in the United States. When we retired from the military in 1996 we moved to CS Colorado as we followed our son, he went to college there, live there one year and moved to Montrose Colorado where we lived 10 years before we sold our house, bought and RV and I followed my hubby all over the United States while he fought wildland fires. I had always wanted to see Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon and California and we traveled through all those states. Always thought I wanted to live in Oregon, but you know what Grace we traveled 6 months all over and though each state we visited had its own beauty I just wanted to come back home to Colorado and our son. Colorado is in my blood I feel like a native and when I leave I miss home so much. The old saying There is no place like home is really true for me, I am home and I never want to leave. But, I do know that if you have never had the opportunity to travel and see what is out there you will never know if where you are at this very moment is where you are meant to be. Grace, I will keep you in my heart and prayers as you search your heart and soul to see where you think you want and need to be, and settle for the rest of your life. My son was a big consideration as well, we have only one child and we found that we wanted to be near him always, he is all we have. The 3 of us would be so lost without be close to one another. So, home is where your heart is and I am home. Farmgirl Hugs, Debbie

If I could live anywhere in the world, it would be....anywhere in England. (Maybe Somerset or The Cotswolds) I've been wanting to go to England since I was five. It's been a life long dream to just go there and never have to come back. I'm 45 now, so I've been wanting to go for quite a while. England calls to me like no other place ever has. I love the manor houses, the castles, the old world charm, the enchanting villages and every single other thing that goes along with being British. I've been studying English history pretty much my whole life, I love pouring over books and learniing everything I possibly can, although I still get confused on royal addresses sometimes. Yes, I've been obsessed with England that long. I have tons of books and dvd's and anything else I can get my hands on. If it's about England, I have to have it. I always call England "The home of my heart"

Marcy, I hope that your dream will one day come true and that you never let go of your dream. Yes, England is beautiful and the people are so friendly there. I do know of a family that live have the year in Colorado and half the year in England and they love it! Imagine tea all the time, just lovely. I will pray that one day your dream will come true, with the passion you have I can not imagine it not happening:-) Farmgirl Hugs, Debbie

I have only traveled to East Africa (Tanzania), North Africa (Morocco),Spain and the U.S. Virgin Islands as an adult. I have spent around 5 mos on St John over the last 5 years. I love Saint John USVI and would love to live there but land costs to much and housing is out the roof expensive. I would not live in Morocco. It would be really hard as a single woman. It is male oriented for sure. The exchange rate would be awesome but still I would not live there. I would love to live in Tanzania. I think you would need an expat community to rely on to get safely settled. But it is a wonderful place. Lot's of goats and cattle there! Spain would be doable. It has so many different geological areas. I love the mountains. I also loved Barcelona though I would not live in a big city. I have heard that Portugal is a great place for US expats. I met a fellow that lives there and he had so many good things to say. I'd look into that if I were considering that type of move. I've also heard that Ireland is expat friendly but I haven't done any research at all. Please be sure to share what you learn with us! Connie

If I had no family to consider, I'd move to Aruba out away from downtown/tourism areas. I miss Aruba!!!!

When I graduated from college, I took a job working with UNICEF in London, England. I stayed there for a year. I loved every minute I was there but I have to say that I was beside myself with joy when I came back to the USA.

I lived in France for about 9 months, wouldn't mind returning there, however I think I would love to live in Haiti or Australia. Ohio will always be home, though!

WOW Ladies - great posts.
So Margaret and June vote for France - is if for the culture, the food, the people or something else. I do have a long distant friend who stays 6 months a year outside of Provence and the rest in Maine..
Marcy I also have a friend in Cotswold - love the people and has a small sheep farm. I do mean small... Great place for fiber.
Megan I have been to Aruba and Diana I also have been to Hawaii both were lovely but too hot for this gal. I am someone who does better if the weather does not get up past 70...
Connie interested in why Tanzania?? I had a couple of friends visit there and gave mixed reviews.
Rachel - Romania/Turkey very interesting. There is a service group that is looking for volunteers to work with ladies in Romania...
I guess part of the reason why I would consider such a grand adventure is I also want to find a place inwhich I could be of service. I know there are many in the U.S. but there are also great needs elsewhere.
Debbie I have traveled but not to Europe, Africa, Aussie land or China. I loved Iceland but their economy is in the toilet but still considering it...Love to land, the people, the history - I spent three weeks living with sheep farmers and was hooked.. I love Colorado but I know it is also because I never lived in any other place. Just wondering if this gal should experience some adventure before it is too late???
Keep the ideas coming ladies this is really getting my thinking. I go into town tomorrow and will stop at the Library to see what books I can find too... Many thanks for your ideas..

My husband wants to go to Iceland quite badly. He'll be so jealous when I tell him you lived there with sheep farmers, lol. I've been to Canada once and it is beautiful but if I was able to live abroad I'd prefer to get a little farther away! I think that if it is something that you are really interested in you should go for it. Do some research and travel to the places you think you'd like the most, then decide if one of them is a place you'd like to plant roots.

Grace, I've traveled all over and two places call my name and I'd return there in a heart beat to live. The first is the Lake District of England, located in the north-west corner of England. I've traveled to 48 countries in Europe and in South America and the Lake District will always have a piece of my heart. The other place is right here in the United States, and that's Charleston South Carolina. I had the opportunity to move there when first graduating from college and didn't take advantage of it. I kick myself all the time for that. I love Charleston with it's old antebellum southern charm, beautiful seashores, spanish moss covered oaks, and friendly, down to earth people. Hope we all can help. Researching new places to go and visit is always such fun. And as a side note, I fell in love with the German 'Hobby Gardens' when there. I wish our towns and cities had them for 'land challenged' people. Andrea |

Hahaha Grace. And what country's economy isn't bad right now? I think you should go adventuring, also. I love to think about it and I get a pretty good fix from watching travel documentaries and shows. I'm born and bred Texas and I've only lived in one other state, Colorado. The scenery was beautiful but the people were just not Texas friendly. I was very happy to come back to the hill country. If I moved to another country it would be Germany. My ancestors are Dutch/German. I'd love to see all the places they came from. I'd also be torn as to what my ancestors would think. After all, they worked so hard to get to America, and here I am going right back where they came from. lol

Oh Grace...it is for the food the people and the land. It is so beautiful there most of the year, except when the Mistral is blowing it can be quite cold. It is such a charming area.

Paradise Plantation, which is where I live. Sorry ladies, no far away, exotic, romantic locations for me. For the first time in my life, my heart is so content right where it is. I know that there's a lot that needs to be done to make it a showplace, but with a little bit of time, we'll get there. I'll take a page out of Dorothy's book, there really is no place like home.

Pagosa Springs, CO. We had property there until a couple years ago. My grandparents entrusted their son to take care of the family compound and he used it as an ATM and lost it to foreclosure. Gods country.

Grace- Why Tanzania? Hummm I'll give you the concrete reasons next but I can honestly tell you the reasons I fell in love were more feeling than fact. I felt so centered there. It was like I found my now. No past and no worry about what was next. The local people I was with live that way. They were puzzled by the tourists that could not let go of "What is next?". My safari guide Thomas looked at one lady and said " I am here. Now." while pointing at his feet. He is Masai as were most of the people I spent time with. The air felt right. The smell was right. The pace of life was right. It felt right and familiar. I fell in love with the children. I taught conversational english in a bush school a couple of hours a day. Those kids so badly wanted an education. Were so eager to learn and so giving and loving. Their voices were like music as they greeted me every day. The grown ups were a little more reserved but warmed up quickly once they trusted you and didn't feel like you were just there to see them like something in a theme park. The expats were friendly and a bit eccentric. : ) I got told in no uncertain terms that it was a very hard transition for most of them. But all of them said they will never go "home" to live again. They say if you make it for a year you will stay a life time. I guess I felt there was so much that could be done. Some service I could offer that they wanted. Not imposing our views on their lives but something practical and in keeping with their culture. I still have a dream of joining the Peace Corps someday. And yes they do accept older people! I met a fellow in Morocco that was in his 60's. Could that be an option for you? Connie
