Wow Beverly what a gracious offer! I would love to take you up on this. Probably not any time soon with the move this summer but a gal can dream right? When is the best time of year to travel to India? What part of India do you live/stay in? If you don't mind my asking what do you do there? How did it happen that you live there part time? I'm captivated with the thought. My trip to Morocco was the result of an invitation by a friend of a friend that said "You know Connie right? Ask her she will go anywhere." She was not willing to go alone, and all I needed was a travel partner too. We met up with a Peace Corps couple she knew there and we had the kind of trip I adore. An insiders experience. Heaven! Tell me what you can and I'll have some dream material that, who knows, could turn into a trip! Connie

I love Wisconsin and don't think i would truly want to live anywhere else...especially the area in the Southwest corner "driftless area", but I have always been fascinated by New Zealand and would love to spend a year there!

If I uprooted my family, with no budget, I would live in either England or Ireland. I love winter and the winters there are big, as for being a farmgirl there, that I am unsure of.

I would like to be someplace that has the ocean and green plants. I have been to northern Italy, Rio de Janeiro, Montreal,Canada, Denmark and some of the Carribean Islands and a cruise tour of Alaska. I enjoyed the food and people in Italy. I was in Rio for work and did not see alot of the area. We were near the favella which is the slums of Rio. The weather was very nice but the high concentration of people was not for me. I liked the people and food in Denmark but it was too cold at the beach.
If you are looking for service and travel try the Peace Corps they have great programs for older people I know several older women who have gone and had a great time. One taught writing in southeast Asia, one taught English as a second language in Eastern Europe and one taught teachers of preschoolers in some o[censored]ry in Africa.
There is a program called Voluteers for Peace based here in Vermont that has programs that might be of interest. There is also a program called Project Hope that is based here in Montpelier Vermont that has a programin Nicaragua that runs a library and learning programs. both of these have websites.
go for it.

If I ever moved away from Washington I think I would want to live in Sweden, Vermont or Arizona. Sweden has so many beautiful lakes and farms. I love the bright friendly Red and Yellow houses in the tiny little villages. My brother lives in St. Albans VT so I've been there to visit a few times and fell in love the quaint little towns and the slower pace of life - it's almost like stepping back in time. Maybe that's why "Justin Morgan had a Horse" was one of my favorite books as a child? My mom grew up in Bisbee AZ. Arizona is gorgeous no matter where in the state you are but I especially love the Prescott/Douglas/Flagstaff area.
Cheers! ~ Marilyn

I have spent the bulk of my life in Spokane, Washington (third generation!) and love it here! There is so much variety in the scenery -- mountains and forests to the east and north, Palouse farmland to the south, the Columbia Basin and scablands to the west... Spokane is the second largest city in the State of Washington yet we are fairly isolated here in the Inland Empire. I love how I can go not very far away from town and be alone on a farm road or on a trail. I love the change of seasons (could live without the HOT summers, though!) and nowadays can't imagine living anywhere else.
I have a special place in my heart for Finland, though. I spent a month living with a farm family in southern Finland in 1980 and really loved it. We went way up north, above the Arctic Circle, and that was so wonderful... There are many lakes and lots of forests... Moose, too! =)
I worked at a few national parks in the 1980s and my favorite, livable, locations were Shenandoah NP (atop the Blue Ridge Mtns. of Virigina) and the Black Hills of South Dakota. My husband is Canadian and we lived in both Whitehorse, Yukon -- NEAT! -- and in the Rocky Mtns. in Kimberley, British Columbia.
I think Spokane is where I'll stay, though.

O.K. here is my next step - love your ideas and places. How does one start looking into living in another country??? Do you have favorite web sight, any insights as to what books might be the best for learning to live in other countries - I have to be in town later this week to return books and thought I might see if you have any suggestions. Doing searchs here on dial up can take a whole day and I don't have that much time in a day to spend.
Again, your wonderful thoughts and shared dreams mean the world to this Colorado native.

In Cornwall--specifically Trevalga, England. It's a small, rural village that sits between Boscastle and Tintagel, the land of the legend of King Arthur. I lived there when I was 18-20 and I long for it, almost every day. Had I stayed, I would never have met my husband or had my amazing daughter, but since I have them, I dream of moving back!

Sounds incredible Jonni - I will have to look that one up..
Wow!!! Karin how amazing.. I had thought of Finland too. I have had many customers from there and they always have such great stories of life there...
Holly you are thinking in my lines - I did go to a meeting with the Peace Corp but at that time they were only placing folks in very hot climates and to be honest I would love to be of service but I know me I just can not do heat and huge bugs. You can put me in subzero climates and I thrive but I get over 70 degrees and the not so nice, I mean really nasty Grace comes out. I have looked at a few other service organizations and again most in very hot climates. I did find one for Russia but I had to speak Russian - so that is not happening in the next couple of months.
Beverly - WOW that would be very interesting. I love the textile works of India and have always wanted to take a spiritual trip there too. Again, I have been considering how to deal with the heat... I know over time your body gets into it but it is during that change time I might just loose my mind. My kids laugh because during the summers here I am up at 3 am to do work by head lamp outside and once it is 10 am I am in the house with bare feet on concrete shop floor and do not move back out till around 8 pm - I would be a perfect night worker but I know even at night the heat does not change much there...
I applied once for a job in the Artic at a research center - I really can do cold standing on my head.
Keep those ideas coming I am so interested in what you have to say and tomorrow I will be going hopefully to the library so I am checking out books of the places you mentioned.

It isn't always hot in India.....during some months its cool. I wouldn't advise peoople to come visit during the extremme heat---though the ac we have in our rooms over there is very good----you hardly hear it working.
Feel free to visit me next winter.....

See Beverly - I have tons to learn... I do have a couple of customers over there and would love to visit. The culture is amazing.
Where in Canada?? I have tons of customers all over and it is interesting either they Love it and would never leave or they want to be anywhere but there... I have looked at property there but really do not have a clue where to begin picking out the best place. Many be not the best word choice but I know there are some places that are anything but BEST...
Trip to library cancelled today so I still have time for more ideas...

Grace, it's something like your "tenant" signs a lease to rent a property for a specific amount of time, and then at the end of that lease period, they are expected to have secured financing to buy it from you. It's usually a way for folks who don't have the FICO score to buy to get settled in a home they want to buy so they can work on "making home" while they work on making mortgage.

I would choose to live where all my family and friends are. I wish we weren't all scattered to the winds. I'd give up a good deal if I thought I could get a bunch of my people to live together. I wouldn't even mind if we got called a commune. :) |

Grace, If I was at the place you are at in your life I would travel like a gypsy all over! But, I would still have my home in Colorado, a base. I would pick all the places abroad, ranging from my first top choices and take 6 months to explore them. I would opt for countries that had certain characteristics that I love! Like climate, food, landscape, hospitatlity, language. If I was whipping out my visa, plane tickets, and backpack, I would definitely choose Greece, the South of France, Italy or even get a job to live in New Zealand. Then I would spend another year traveling in the U.S. Places like; Alaska, Hawaii, the Great Lakes, Utah, the Channel Island, and New England and don't forget Wyoming! I think our own country has a lot to offer. We have a lot of culture, and a variety of foods, and you don't need to learn French, or Italian. Good Luck, maybe try traveling and sampling what you like before you re-locate! The world has so much to offer, depending on YOUR taste. Enjoy the flavors!! |

Nikki sorry for the delay and love your post. I so agree and have been thinking and looking into what it would cost to store my fiber business and some personal items and then travel around. I have spent a great deal of time in Wyoming and always enjoyed it. I have been to Hawaii and it is still to warm for me but that is an incredible place and I love the fresh fruit at will... Utah is one that I visit mostly as a child and only a couple of times since moving to the farm. I know there you have to be in the right spot for it to be workable. New England I only visited once - in the fall, magical it was but not been there in the summer. So thanks again for your wonderful suggestions and your right more investigations are necessary but you ladies have truely been wonderful about sharing and hope I get more great insights from my MJ Sister's...

I live on part of what used to be part of our farmily farm here in southwest Colorado . . . born and raised here. LOVE IT HERE my roots are DEEP!!!! I am of Scottish/Irish heritage and I would love to live . . .but only part time in Scotland. There are many areas of Scotland that I love, but I"m partial to the Borders (where the Armstrongs clan is "seated"), but I love the Highlands around Huntly (which is the clan seat of MY family). But I love Colorado and it's mountains and stunning beauty too much to not want to live right here. So it would have to be part time in Scotland (the highest mountain in Britain is less than 4000 feet in elevation . . . and their mountains are just nice little "mounds").
Been to the Bahamas and Hawaii . . . Beautiful! However, I believe I'd go nuts with the lack of land mass to explore!!! CJ

I know what you mean CJ - I have lived here all my life and there is a part of me who thinks it is a perfect place to live but I also do have a part of me who thinks that I must spread my wings a bit... So each night I pray on it and wait for some guidance. I am enjoying reading of everyone's dreams, desires and plans - gives me something to really think about. I give thanks each morning when I wake up here on my farm with a great view of Pikes Peak and then am greeted by my sweet one's and also the wild life who share's this land with me.
Never in my life have I even questioned where I was to live. Something new in my world.

I would definitely choose Denmark or Sweden. Only problem is they are very expensive and therefore not the best place to retire too. If I win the lottery though, I will definitely move there!
I am hoping to go back to both countries in the next few years. They are beautiful and both are happy places.

I am wondering Dawn if I was not retiring but willing to still be working is the job market better then what we have here?? I understand times are rough everywhere but some countries are growing and have a better outlook for the people. I have many customers in Denmark and I rind they are excited for what I do - Thanks for the heads up and hope you get to go back soon.
