It's actually an Allentown mailing code but we live in the little town of Wescosville.

My name is Melissa, married to Scott with two children, a gentleman's pair I'm told, Jacob and Emma.

We moved to our current homestead in the winter of 2008 after purchasing our then 100 yr old home from my husbands grandmother's estate, the same home my husband's great grandparents had built to start their family.

This home has seen many things and has grown many a food supply for the families that have lived here. Our goal is to also carry on that history. We have six plots down in our lower yard full of tomatoes, peas, cucumbers, potatoes, onions, peppers....tea....and more I'm sure. Our home also came fit with three seperate underground cisterns to hold rain water for household use. Thank God the house now has running water and sewer so now those cisterns hold water for our garden.

This year, in May, we added six chickens to our homestead. What a joy that has been...we do believe one of our Hens is really a Rooster and are trying to decide what to do, as we did not plan on having a noisy bird amongst our neighbors. We are currently building a chicken area/run so the birds can run free-er than they are now.

I've tried canning already, both pickles and tomato sauce, and I bake like crazy, too much in fact.

So that's a little about me....looking forward to enjoying these boards.

Enjoying my little Homestead

Welcome from Tennessee Melissa! Enjoy yourself here. These are a great bunch of women with so much to offer. Looking forward to hearing from you!
Everything old is new again as the saying goes. We are putting in a rain water collection system at our farm for irrigation. We will eventually put in a UV treatment system so we can use it in the house as well.
I know you will love your chickens. They are amazingly fun and productive.

Welcome Melissa!

We're practically neighbors! I'm up in Cresco (a few miles NW of Stroudsburg) and go to Allentown fairly often - Schantz Greenhouse, Hobby Lobby, Christmas Tree Shoppe! Maybe we can get together one of these days. There are a few other local farm girls from the forum also in Kunkletown, Honesdale, etc.

Hope you enjoy it here as much as I do.

Big farmgirl hugs,
Luanne

Greetings Luann,
I've heard of Cresco, I worked at our local Christian Camp in Stroudsburg called Twin Pines for a few years, my kids still attend camp there during the summer. Very familiar with Dan Schantz, the Christmas tree shop, hobby lobby....all familiar stores to me. If your ever in the area stop in at Josh Early Candies, I also work there part time in the summer and, well, pretty much my entire winter with the holiday's.

Hi Melissa!

Did you hear that the Dan Schantz store in Bethlehem is closing the end of June? The one off Lehigh Street is going to stay open, though. I love that place! I'll definitely try to find the candy shop when we get down there again. Can you tell me what street it is on so I can program it into my GPS?

Josh Early is on tilghman street, across from the kmart shopping center, Corner of cetronia rd......the shopping center behind us has an AMC movie theatre if you need GPS points.

Yes, I did hear about Bethlehem closing, it just so happens that a girl I work with at JE also has a relative that works for Dan Schantz....

Welcome! Your home sounds amazing! I am going to try canning for the first time this year, and bread. Jealous that you find the time to bake :)

Hey from Georgia/Ohio.
Live in Ga and raised in Ohio where we still have family and friends.
I asked my husband where your little town was for he travled in Pa. He used to visit a truckstop in Fogelsville. The truckstop was called Trexler. Do you know where that is?
And if you want to read about me go to debra e.

A warm Farmgirl Welcome from Long Island,NY Melissa!
Your homestead sounds just lovely! And I can relate about the chicken turned rooster thing! 3 Years ago we got what we thought were 4 hens only to find out one day while we were in the backyard that "poochie" was a rooster NOT a hen! The kids and I got a chuckle out of that, and we did keep him for a while. I actually enjoyed the crowing. Of course I checked with all of my neighbors to see if the objected and none did. Eventually he turned very nast though- he was not in charge of enough hens..so we gave him to a local farm. We just got 4 more "hens" 5 weeks ago- they were day old when we got them. They came with a 90% guarantee that they were really hens- so we have fingers crossed on that one.
Enjoy the site and all of the wonderful farmgirl sisters here!
Smiles,

~Laurie

Welcome PA sister :0)! I am not too far from Luann up and over in Honesdale, PA. I've not heard of your town but I do know where Allentown is :0). I am fairly new to MJF, but already I have gleaned SO much information and found the most amazing blogs/ladies here! Such fun and highly motivating. I don;t have much land, but I do have some containers with plants in 'em...no chickens but a very old, lazy, adorable golden...a bunch of kids--4 to be exact. We moved to PA about 12 years ago and while it was a struggle in this most recent move ( 4 years here in our hopefully LAST house), we are settling in nicely!
Well, enjoy being here!

Just a Brooklyn, NY gal trying to figure out this country thing after 12+ years in the woods of NE PA!

Welcome Melissa from a NE Ohio Farmgal. I love the childrens names. I think of that movie "For Richer or Poorer", where Tim Allen & Kristy Alley pretend to be Amish and join their "order." That was one funny movie. haha
I love the sound of your homestead. Very nice! Good luck with "Pat", the confused chicken. lol
You're gonna love this site. So much to share, learn and giggle over. Lots of great Gals too!

I know exactly where fogelsville is, it's about ten minutes from my house, but I don't know where the exact truck stop is, although fogelsville has a ton of trucking type stops, tons of warehouses as well

Yes, I go to Echo Hill quite a bit. It is owned by a mennonite family. Maybe I'll see you there sometime. It's nice to find another farmgirl so close.

Hi Melissa & Laila -

Where is Echo Hill and what kind of store is it - sounds like it might be a fun place to visit - or maybe we could all meet up there and shop?

Just came back from 4 days down in Lancaster county with our Amish friends - it was so nice to get away for a few days.

Hugs,
Luanne

Hi Luanne,
Echo Hill is a small bulk food store with lots of items from all kinds of flours, whole grains, cereals, pasta, candy making supplies, organic goods, raw milk, cheese, nuts, herbs, spices plus lots more. It is located between Fleetwood and Lyons on a country road. The address is 244 Dryville Rd., Fleetwood, PA 19522. It would be great to meet!

Oh - sounds wonderful! I go to a store like that in Centerville (near Bird-in-Hand) called Centerville Bulk Foods. Their prices are wonderful, and all their herbs & spices are so fresh. Also, it's the only place I've been able to find the old fashioned Oxident flour. I love it for making bread, and no one up in this area cares it. Maybe Echo Hill does!

Luann that is one of our most favorite places to visit, we try to make 4-5 trips there in a year, I mean, it's only one hour away from us, but driving around and just picking a road to drive down is so much fun.

I don't think there is a street number for it, but it is just past the intersection of Centerville Road and Scenic Drive south of Leola/New Holland near Groffdale Road and Musser Schoolhouse Road. Hope this helps!
