Hey ladies...I'm new here, just wanted to introduce myself. I guess you could say I have big dreams of having my own little farm someday soon, someday when I can finally put a failing marriage behind me and be on my own with just my children and my grand-daughter. I don't know how I'm gonna do it yet...but that is my dream. I'm thinking of starting with a couple of hens for eggs..can't wait! I would love to have my own little place for chickens, goats for their milk to make soap and try my hand at cheese making..yummy..a large garden..and a sunflower garden to harvest their seeds. My question to any of you farmgirls is... Have anyone of you been in my shoes? Have you devorced and made it on your own with your own farm and was able to sustain a living with your farm? Selling eggs...veggies from your garden? Please if so, give me some advice..tips..encouragement..etc..I just don't want to have to depend on him for one single thing....he thinks I can't make it..I would love to prove him wrong.. Sorry so long..just had a lot on my chest this morning...Nan H.

Hi Nan...

Courage and strength to you. You have a tough road ahead but don't give up.

First of all, if you can get a copy of Mary Jane's first book (the Ideabook, one) then you need to read it because she has been in those shoes. She is a great encouragement!

Secondly, make yourself a collage of your dreams so that at times when you fear that you won't make it (and those times will come) you can remind yourself of your dreams and gain strength from it.

Also, find friends that you can confide in and turn to for encouragement. As MJ has often said in her stories and articles, we NEED each other! None of us makes it on our own.

I wish you the very best, and welcome to the farmgirl forum! This is an awesome network of compassionate women with strengths beyond measure!

much love~

Hi Nan, Welcome from Missouri. Hang in there and be sure to ask all of the questions you can think of out here! One thing is for certain though, your chicken math may be a little off...wink...We all start out with "just a couple" and end up with a flock!
Best of luck with your goals...do lots of research and think in practical terms.
Another place to look at is the USDA, if you plan to make a living at small scale farming. They include women in some of the same programs as minorities, so you might get some benefits by following some of their offerings.
Take care!

Sorry to hear that you are in a bad place right now, but continue with positive thinking and focusing on your dreams...you can do it. As many of the other gals have said- this is a great place to be- so many warm, welcoming fellow farmgirls here to both listen and offer advice.

Hi to Nan from Wisconsin. You have wonderful dreams, just keep dreaming them and little by little they'll become a reality...one step at a time. Don't let other people tell you what you can't do. Even just growing some pots of herbs on a windowsill is a step towards your farmgirl dreams. Start small and just keep on growing from there. You'll get lots of support here. When you're feeling down, visit the farmgirls online.

No problem Nan,
How are you doing today? Are you having some rain in your area or is it sticky hot like here in Ga? There is a book that I give out to people that are down & out! I was thinking that this could be a good one for you to read. It is by Charles Stanley called the Source of my Strength. It is an uplifiting book. You can sometimes get it on Amazon.com (used) and cheap. Just some thoughts and ways to help your day. Thinking of you,
debra e

Thank you Madeline...I keep holding on to my dreams...I just recently went to work (cashier at a drug store chain) after being a stay-at-home-mom for 22 years. It's only part time..but it something. Nan.
