Does anyone else do this? Am I a total nut?

When I am shopping for plants to go in my garden, I try to find "bargains". For example you can get one flat of plants for 21 bucks at the local nursery here but they have to be four packs.

So for the tomatoes I saw some foot and a half tall ones that they were obviously going to replant in a bigger pot but hadn't gotten around to- so two four packs went in. For the cabbages and swiss chard there were a lot that had double plants as they had not been properly thinned- in they went. I picked the most densely grown celery and got 37 tiny seedlings from one cell. 90% of the celery is still alive and I have every reason to expect that I will get a harvest from it.

Sometimes it is time intensive to seperate the roots and sometimes you just have to rip them apart because they are so grown together. But it looks like all my traumatized plants are surviving so far and I may only loose one cabbage- but it lost most of it's roots in the seperation so that is understandable.

So am I nuts or does anyone else do this to stretch the plant budget a bit more?

Alee,

I was looking around for some inexpensive perennials to plant in front of my picket fence and in a new perennial garden. I don't mind the little four inch potted ones because they are easier to dig holes for and grow relatively quickly. I found some at a grocery store for $1.49 each so bought ten of them. There were Shasta daisies, pincushion flowers, coreopsis, blanket flowers, and something else -- ? They are actually just like some others I got at other stores but cheaper.

I was also eyeing a cute planter -- a metal pot that looks like a watering can with a spout and a handle. They had them at Fred Meyer for $25 (including flowers). I spotted some on the half the price cart (for whatever reason). I wasn't crazy about one of the plants in it so took it out and replaced it with others. I LOVE it!

I also found some great shrubs in gallon pots. They are Monrovia brand and were only $7.50!!! I bought three snowmound spirea, a blue mist spirea, and some kind of ninebark.

Of course, now I have to plant them all!!!! = /

Oh Alee-
You are singin' my tune! My husband teases me- he says "do you go to Lowes everyday"? To which I reply- "Well not EVERY day"...
Truth of the matter is I sometimes go almost twice a day- there are 2 Lowes within a few miles of me so I literally go from one to the other on some days. I shop nothing but their clearance racks and boy oh boy let me tell you... the deals I have gotten! My latest find was the other day when I got 2 "knockout" rose bushes for only $1 each...YES..$1. Amazing. I also got 2 blackberry bushes for $1 on that same day. I have gotten so many perrenials there for just $1-$2- its amazing! Today I got a coreopsis on clearance- why I do not know..there is nothing wrong with it- in fact it has buds. for just $2. I also get 4 Mandevilla for only $2 each.Hmmm...blue pincushions, balnket flowers,columbines- all for $1-$2 each on various days.I am literally running out of room to plant things- just told hubby the other day that I need more gardens!
So to answer your question-YES I shop the clearance racks!
Happy Planting!
