How many of y'all spin and weave on here?? I started doing this 2 years ago. And what is your favorite wool to spin and why?

I love to spin..been doing it for hmmmmm at least 20 years now. I have an ashford traditional wheel. My favorite to spin is always wool from my own sheep. (one is Icelandic and one is Navajo churro) I need to spin more. Shearing the sheep this week though...so that will get me going! I have had alot going on and have knitted but not spun in the past month at least..maybe more. sigh. I do some navajo weaving as well but mostly knit with the yarn.

I love to spin too. I have been in a spinning slump due to my new assignment as taxi driver to my kids. I knit alot right now because I can take it along in the car and work on it while I wait. I love to go the Spinning events in my area and get already carded roving to spin, the colors they use to dye it with are so fabulous and I haven't had the time to do my own dying lately. I have a Kromski wheel that my husband bought for me to take to events. My MIL gave me the family wheel that came from Europe with my husbands great, great, great, great grandma in the 1800's. It is very cool and spins excellent fine yarn. Hope to have more time to work on spinning come fall.

I am a spinner and I found this passion 15 years ago. I have more wheels then we want to talk about but my fav is my Ashford Joy!!!
My whole source of income has to do with fiber - raising the animals and every stage of the process to finished items. I also teach many forms of fiber arts but again my heart is with my animals and my spinning....
Anytime you want to talk fiber I am there.

I'm a newbie to spinning since last year, love it, I think I love the quietness of the craft.
Still learning about fibers.
Weaving I have done in various forms since I was a kid, finally got a floor loom 2 years ago.

Just learning. Started with a drop spindle and have moved on to the kick spindle a dear friend made for me earlier this year. Now to find the time to sit!! I was just given a bag of angora goat wool and the wool from two chocolate brown sheep this past few days. So I am trying to figure out how to clean it all so I can move to the spinning part!

Spinning is on my crafting "wish list." i will get to it someday, but don't have the money to start a new craft right now. have to make do with sewing, quilting, crocheting, knitting, cross-stitch, counted needlepoint, and learning to tat...that might be it! Oh yeah, i have a couple of gift certificates for Amazon and was thinking about getting a bobbin lace kit. I really want to learn to spin, but my DH absolutely refused to have sheep or goats. he is more of a cow kind of guy!

Oh Grace I wish I lived closer to all of you girls, I have wanted to learn to spin forever. I knit and crochet so to me spinning just goes along with that. I bought myself a small drop spindle wit wool and thought I would start there, well I have had it like 4 years and I have yet to figure it out, but I will someday. To me it is a peaceful and quiet art/hobby that would surely help me relax and take my mind off of worries, pain etc. But, knitting does that for me too. Sad thing is I am surrounded by an Alpaca and Llama farm but neither lady spins. I visit their farms often since they are so close, I just love the animals especially the Alpacas.

Debbie when ever we might meet I will gladly sit with you and teach you to spin... I teach hundreds a year and I promise I have never had a student who did not leave with the skill. It always makes me sad that those who raise a fiber animal does not spin - why have them if you can not enjoy their gifts. I have taught hundreds of Alpaca farms how to at least understand the fiber to get it sold to those who will turn it into something special.. Debbie I will have a spindle waiting for you..

I am so glad to know that there is spinners on here as well!!! :) I love spinning so much, my favorite wool to use is Shetland and Shetland/crosses ( These are the type of sheep I have). I have a Thumbelina spinning wheel that I bought from New Zealand. It is a beautiful wheel and spins great also.

| I had only spun wool, and spun the yarn for a jacket I knitted using moss stitch. Past couple of months I spun alpaca, and just plied a 50% silk, wool and tencel blend that I spun last week. Came out great! I'm in awe of folks who can use phrases like "I used a modified long draw...twists per inch...etc." I basically make the wheel go one way until I'm happy, then I make it go the other way to ply. Seems to work out. Maybe one day I'll understand the technology part of it. |

I hear you weaverbird. I taught myself to spin, and my yarn stays together so I am happy. I have two sheep, so I spin and knit with their wool. I would love to learn weaving!

Spinning and weaving are both on my want to learn list. I've been trying to find someone to teach me to spin but haven't had any luck yet. Might have to move to find someone :O)

Me too! Me too! Have been spinning for 20 some years and weaving for about 15. Have two wheels, an Ashford Traveler and an old model ORANGE Columbine. Like them both for different reasons. The Columbine (which is metal) is a workhorse with a huge bobbin but not "pretty" enough to take to demos. I have several looms ranging from a simple rigid heddle, an inkle, and two different sized 8 harness table looms. Anyone in the midwest area gong to Midwest Weavers Conference in the upper penninsula of Michigan later this month? It's held every two years around the midwest and is a week of nothing but fiber related classes. I treat myself (after saving for two years) and come home on fiber overload!!
