Come on over & check out my recipe for a Quick Baking MIx. Does anyone else use these? I have several cookbooks that show me out to make my own mixes & I am going to share them on my blog!

I have two make-a-mix cook books. I love them! Just recently made a double batch of basic cookie mix. It takes a minute or two to mix it up (and lots of different cookie options) and then presto 2 dozen cookies. So yummy!

I got out of the habit of using them for several years. But am definitely starting back up. Makes my life SO much easier!

Do what you love, love what you do.

Easier & it saves you money! No more buying bisquick, pancake mixes, cookie mixes, bread mixes, etc! One of mine also has spice mixes, hot chocolate, ketchup, you name it! I think they are both out of print but whenever I find one I buy it! They are great!

Karla,

I have one of those books myself and make and use several of the mixes. We really like the Brownie Mix and I always get compliments on the Home-Style Dressing Mix when I take a tray of veggies!

I am looking for a general quick mix that I can make at home, but without vegetable shortening. Does anyone have a recipe?

You have to have some sort of shortening. Are you wanting to use butter instead? Just leave it out & add it at the time of use. That way you still get the benefit of having part of the m,ix ready already!

Years ago, when the kids were at home, I baked with a master mix using a booklet I found called the Missouri Mix. It was much like the mix you buy in the yellow box. I got away from making it, as it was just Dan & I. I have since found the NEW Missouri mix on line using less salt. Check out this website and see what you think. I am going to use the smaller version to keep ingredients fresh.

http://extension.missouri.edu/publications/DisplayPub.aspx?P=GH1055

BTW, I also bake my own bread, an Amish recipe. I place 4 of the 6 cups of flour & all the dry ingred (except the yeast) in a container. I then just have to mix the wet ingred & yeast together, then mix my container contents, gradually adding the next 2 cups of flour. Makes it super easy.

I use my own mixes too, I don't tolerate MSG or aspartame very well, and I like the way mine tastes way way better than any mix. I also think with homemade we use better quality ingredients and less crappy filler ingredients. Check out my recipes here: http://afarminmyheart.blogspot.com/2011/05/dry-pantry-mixes.html

You gals are great. Thanks for sharing all these recipes. I just love it. I agree with ya'll....the less ingredients, the better! That's why I like "Turkey Hill" ice cream....very few ingredients, very natural. Has anyone else tried it? No, ya'll probably make yer own. LOL
