I have two make-a-mix cook books. I love them! Just recently made a double batch of basic cookie mix. It takes a minute or two to mix it up (and lots of different cookie options) and then presto 2 dozen cookies. So yummy!
I got out of the habit of using them for several years. But am definitely starting back up. Makes my life SO much easier!

I am looking for a general quick mix that I can make at home, but without vegetable shortening. Does anyone have a recipe?

Years ago, when the kids were at home, I baked with a master mix using a booklet I found called the Missouri Mix. It was much like the mix you buy in the yellow box. I got away from making it, as it was just Dan & I. I have since found the NEW Missouri mix on line using less salt. Check out this website and see what you think. I am going to use the smaller version to keep ingredients fresh.

BTW, I also bake my own bread, an Amish recipe. I place 4 of the 6 cups of flour & all the dry ingred (except the yeast) in a container. I then just have to mix the wet ingred & yeast together, then mix my container contents, gradually adding the next 2 cups of flour. Makes it super easy.

I have two make your own mixes books. Haven't used them in years. Thanks for the reminder that I should be using them! Tammyb

You gals are great. Thanks for sharing all these recipes. I just love it. I agree with ya'll....the less ingredients, the better! That's why I like "Turkey Hill" ice cream....very few ingredients, very natural. Has anyone else tried it? No, ya'll probably make yer own. LOL
