hello fellow farmgirls,
my name is leslie. i'm a 24 year old, wife, mother, eco-feminist, and transitioning farmdreamer to farmgirl. while i've always been crafting, cooking, and baking, this is my first year starting our family's grocer garden and raising backyard chickens. i live in north carolina, but even with its rich agricultural history, it has been hard to find a community of like-minded women to connect with. a friend of mine gave me an copy of maryjanesfarm and i was hooked! finally...people who get it! i look forward to continue learning from and connecting with all of you lovely ladies!

Hi Leslie. I feel the same way sometimes. I love your name. I know people wonder about me. And I let them. Why not? I know you will fit right in here with all of us. I am always being asked what I am growing or butchering or milking. But I LOVE IT!

i think i find that i'm an unlikely farmgirl because i would have never thought that i'd actually BECOME a farmgirl. it seems so obvious on paper, but it couldn't have been a bigger surprise to me. just imagine me, a multiracial mystery girl, wearing yoga pants and five finger shoes, with my tattoo sleeve displayed for everyone to see shopping for feed and seed at the country store. people really don't know what to think about me, but they tolerate my presence. ecofeminism is philosophical school of thought and social movement that finds connections between the domination and oppression felt by women and the abuse and degradation of the natural environment (men control women, human controls nature). so...i believe that society has commercialized, trivialized, and devalued the skills that our foremothers possessed, making women reliant on systems who view their skills, knowledge, and work as backward and unnecessary. "who needs to grow their own food or make their own clothes when you can just buy it from a big box store?" so instead of valuing things strictly as economic resources, ecofeminists view humans, plants, animals (the natural world) beyond monetary price and focus on the relationships between all things. its probably really out there, but this theory is what drives all my farmgirl actions...hope that explains more than confuses!

I, too, am a fairly unlikely farmgirl. I used to be a goth rock girl =D Now at 50, instead of looking creepy and cool in all of that black lace and make up, I look like I'm waiting for my own funeral =P
I love being a farm girl! I thought I'd never find a group that I actually belonged in. We ladies really are like a big warm, loving and opinionated group of sisters. I am always AMAZED at the talent and wit of the girls here. I have the crafting skills of a gnat, but I do love to garden,cook, and I simply adore chickens! Your own fresh eggs are simply the best!
What are you growing this year? And which breed(s) of chickens do you raise?
Anyway, it's always good to meet a new farmgirl =)

osagegypsy- i love my shoes, because i love being barefoot. the first week or two is a real adjustment to having your toes not crunched together, but spread apart. it has really improved the way my feet grip the floor during yoga, my posture/back pain is resolving...or maybe i'm just more aware of it, and did i mention i love being barefoot. it seems like the most natural thing to wear them everywhere!
annika- i've got a few types of lettuce, simple herbs, corn, green beans, watermelon, zucchini, squash, eggplant, a few types of peppers, tomatoes, butternut squash, pumpkins, and whatever else my gardening mentor gives me to experiment with. i honestly have no idea what i'm doing, just going with the flow and learning from my mistakes. i have a monster chicken named attila the hen who was supposed to be a white barred rock but looks more like a white mini turkey. picka lil bit is a sweet buff orpington. then two nameless buff colored ameraucanas who act like dragons. my ladies should start laying next month (fingers crossed) and next spring i hope to add to the flock (and surprise my hubby with some silver and golden laced wyandottes). i will now be known as a crazy cat and chicken lady...i already have a cat tattoo and it looks like a chicken is in the near future! tell me, what kind of apron does a gothic farm girl wear? i'm sure it's awesome!
