I laughed when I saw the last page of the MJF mag this month. I looooove me some bottle trees! I have one. We made it out of a 4x4 post, set in concrete in an old washtub. We put dowels in the post. I want one of the ones made of metal that are more free-form, though.

So many people have told me that they're for keeping away the " 'haints"! (the ghosts). Anyway, I think they're fun!

I have one, lol and i love it! I have been collecting older colored bottles for it. It site at our river camp, much to my mother in laws dismay... she does not get it. I know my mom has one as well. I was so happy to see it in the magazine, had to show MIL, lol!

I have one that we made from a 4x4 and dowel rods. Unfortunately I don't have nay blue bottles on it --yet. But I am searching for some. Bottle trees come from the Congo where they'd hang blue glass in trees to capture evil spirits. Here in the south, you'll see lots of cobalt or "haint" blue which is to keep out evil spirits. The idea with the bottles is that the spirits get caught inside and can't get out. You can also hang the bottles or glass in trees--I've seen that done as well and like the way it looks.

I have one and it is used for my DH's beer making! We sterilize the bottles and dry them on the tree!

Happy to be a "Raggedy Ann" in a Barbie World!

I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.

I have one I made from a cedar tree trunk. I used the branch stubs and some 3 inch screws to put the bottles on. I put green wine bottles of many shades on the bottom on the ground and the first level. Then I put graduated sizes of blue bottles, all shades, up the trunk from large to very small at the top. I put a few small green bottles scattered through it. It looks like a giant delphinium. I had started a red glass one before the construction but it has not been finished yet. Red glass is even harder to find than blue!
I have a friend that hangs hers from tree branches on string. Be sure to use corks if you do that. She lost a few the first year cause water in them froze and broke them. : (
I'm a sucker for colored glass. I had a whole window filled with small bottles all colors hanging from different lengths of fishing line. I attached them with white thumb tacks. It was beautiful when the sun shone in. But it was horrible to keep clean. Not near as prettty with dust all over it.

Lol, Connie, I used to do the same thing with small bottles, until I found out I'd have to dust the darn things! So, now I use them in my greenhouse to start cuttings in water. Oh well.

I love the 'haint blue'. I have several blue bottles on my tree for that reason.

Amanda mine was in the kitchen. Dusting didn't work. They had to be taken down and washed. I did it twice. Then I let them be dusty a while and finally took them down, washed them and put them in a box waiting for my next inspiration.

At the livestock sale yesterday we came across a guy with lots and lots of old bottles--if I'd had more money I'd have bought them all! I did get 2 cobalt blue ones!!! I got them out on my tree now and love it!!!

Ok, I had to look up "haint blue" cause I had no idea what color that is, now I'm more confused then ever? Seems to be a number of different blues and they range in intensity. I will see if I can refer it to glass. maybe that will clear things up for me

Generally it is a cobalt shade of blue--at least where I live anyway. I can't recall which paint company it was but one came out with a "haint blue" color.

In the Shenandoah Valley, people painted their porch ceilings a lovely shade of aqua. I was always told it was to discourage mosquitos. This "haint blue" is an interesting subject. I just Googled it, and oh my!

This pic is the bottle tree (and our home made rain barrel, lol)before I got the haint blue bottles...I'll have to get another one (hopefully a better one) to share. I have bottles on all 4 sides of the post.

Neat info about the aqua blue ceilings... there's an old plantation style house close by with an aqua blue ceiling... now I know why :) Love the bottle trees!

The back porch ceiling on our victorian house is pale blue. We do use that color to help keep bugs away. It also feels so much cooler visually. It does get hot here!

I love the bottle trees! I've only recently started exploring these forums, what fun to already find a topic I can contribute to! Here's my blue bottle tree. This photo is from a year or so ago and some of the "arms" have broken so one of my jobs this summer is to rebuild it in a sturdier fashion.

Yup, you are right! It's a recycled artificial tree. I stripped the branches to the wire core to use them.

how cool, Rae! My mother in law has a bottle tree...she lives about 1/4 mile away on the neighboring farm, and I love the bottle tree out front. They're so pretty glittering in the sun!
