I'm seriously thinking about making some dish drainer quilts for my Etsy shop. Since I already do home decor items, I feel like they fit my existing inventory. But I'm really not sure what to set my price at. What you would you pay for one of these? And I'm not sure it's kosher to take MJ's idea and market it. Does anyone know?

I am sorry Sarah I do not know either about selling one of MJF ideas but I mean she did give directions for it. Perhaps you can email Brian an ask him, he will tell you whether you can or not.
But, I do know I would love for you to make me a couple as I do not use a sewing machine, and of course I will pay for them.

| Sarah, I bought a padded drainer at a kitchen outlet and paid $10.00 for it. Its just plain,plain but I love not having soppy towels to deal with. Hope this helps. |

| I understand about the cost of your time. I knit soap sacks to hang around your outside facuet to wash your hands. When I asked a friend a fair price to sell @ farmers mkt, she said $5.00. I felt sick, the soap costs me $1.00 a bar. Plus it takes about 1 hr. if I don't have to stop. Could you make a profit if you sold them for $25.00? I would probably spend that much for one. |

I have done and sold crafts since daughter, now 19, was born. The sad thing i have discovered is that for the majority of crafts you do not make much on your time if you factor it in an hourly sense. The good thing is that for something like this you could set up a kind of assembly line for yourself to make them sew up quicker. Not sure on price though.

Oh no Kim you didn;t hurt my feelings at all! :) I don't bruise that easily. No, I just hate that things are so cheap and we have to convince people that it really is worth it pay us for our time at a fair wage. It's the only way to run a profitable business.

As a fellow sewer, I would purchase items that I knew were handmade by the person behind the table at craft shows. I know people who crochet rugs, make their own ceramics, etc. I know what you mean about people that don't realize what it takes to produce the product. There are customers on the other end of the spectrum, who appreciate all the time and effort put into producing a product. I still think though that we don't charge enough. It is so hard because the way that things are, that people are not always willing to pay what we are asking.

I also buy them because they are well made. I know that it isn't something that will fall apart after one use. Besides, I would rather support the crafter, than China.
This one show that I used to do, is supposed to be all handmade There were a couple of vendors who showed their items to get accepted into the show. When show day arrived, they added imported items to their booth. Some even left the "Made in Chine." sticker still on the item. These vendors were told to remove the imported items from their booth. The promoter would usually ask them to leave, but since they didn't want to disrupt the craft show, they let the people stay (minus the imports).

That is nasty. People go to craft shows to get handmade items. That defeats the whole purpose of handmade shows like that. Those are the people who are in it for the money, just to turn the profit, and they don't really believe in supporting people.

The promoters of the show are in the 80's and the funds from the booth fees benefit the handicap children and adults. When I was there, the long time vendors would keep an eye out. I don't do the show anymore because it is too hard on the family. When I visited the last time, a vendor had Barbie dolls in their booth. Another had remote control cars. Others chose items that look handmade, but were imports.
It is so sad.

Oh I know! We had some guy stop here trying to sell us a packaged meat deal, USDA organic, said he was with a 'local' company (in the next state) and trying to find new customers. So I started looking at it, and all the boxes were from the Midwest. Not that I have any problem with Midwest meat farmers, but this was definitely not local, and I highly doubt organic. It was so shady too, he didn't even have a business card. It makes me so upset to know there are false people preying on the organic movement.

I am in the throws of making a bunch. I'm desperately waiting for more batting to come, cause I ran out of my low bat stuff. I sold two to Debbie (Blessed in Colorado) and she should be receiving them any day. As soon as I get some more batting, I'll be making and posting more! Can't wait!

They arrived yesterday Sarah and they are beautiful, I absolutely love them, thank you so very much. Not sure which is my favorite, the one with or with out the ruffle. I will try to get a picture posted today, I have a very busy day but I will sure try, if not tomorrow for sure.

Okay, here is a picture of one of the Dish Drain Pads, where is the other one you ask? My Sister came yesterday morning and took one before I could get the pictures taken, she loved them! So, she got the one without the ruffle and different fabric but you will see by the pictures what they look like. They are so cute and Sarah did such a wonderful job, nice to have something made in the good ole USA. Thank you again Sarah, sure glad I ordered two:-)
