I put a small pump in the very small "pond" I have by my bird feeding station. The pond has been there for 2 years. I keep it out all year - winter I have a heater. There's rocks for birds to rest on. Anyway, my Mom told me that the sound/action of water will attract birds.

I can't say that I've noticed my bird population increasing - but it sure has attracted the rabbits! I've never had so many in my yard in all the years we've lived here. Squirrels too! They come and eat the seed that has fallen to the ground.

We're going to put up our wildlife camera to see what else is visiting the pond. I've found scat that I can't identify. I'm thinking coyote. We will see!

Unfortunately for us, our barn cats deter birds, and often catch and eat them. I do have bird feeders up, and a hummingbird visits us on the front porch throughout the summer. I love watching them dive bomb the cats when they are walking around outside.

Your setup is similar to ours. Our little "frog pond" in front of our house is about 6 yards from the bird feeders. It has a little pump, too, with a short spout of water that helps keep the pond aerated and makes a little trickle of waterfall sound. It's popular with frogs! We have rabbits but they stay in the hedgerow area much farther away. Could be you're using sunflower seeds and other larger seeds that attract small rodents -- which in turn attract predators like coyotes.

We use a wild songbird mix with all little seeds, as well as the tiny black thistle/Nyjer seed that the finches and other (very pretty) small birds love. We have the occasional 'possum, skunk or groundhog around and under the porch in front, but not because of the birdseed.

I have had coyotes jump up and pull down bird feeders, and eat all the seed, it's pretty funny to watch, but deceided it was too dangerous to attract them in that close, so had to stop feeding the birds...but they will get into my garden sometimes and grab squash and run...
