I have a Sebastopol Goose named Lucy. We hatched her from an egg, last summer. (we thought "she" was a girl, but "she" hasn't laid any eggs, so I think it's a boy)Lucy has been pretty calm but in the last couple of months, she has been really aggressive, biting and nipping. "She" has been hissing really bad, and where she once enjoyed being with her chicken family, we had to move her into her own pen after she kept going after our Barred Rock Chickens. Does anyone know if this is just because it's "mating" season? Is she always going to be mean, and loud? I miss my sweet Lucy Goose! |

I do not know a lot about geese. years ago we had two geese we bought as goslings. They both ended up to be males. They were very territorial. Someone told me that if you were mean to them they would not hiss and bite. We were never successful at that. We ended up giving them away.
I guess we had them in 1990 because the census woman came to the house unannouced. The geese pecked at her ankles and the llama snorffled her hair. she complained to the town clerk that our animals attacked her. The town clerk asked if she had called ahead to make an appointment so we could contain the animals. She said, no. The town clerk said serves you right.

As a general rule, geese are not the best of pets, and a gander will be the more aggressive of the 2, you might think about getting a second goose, a female if the one you have is male, and giving them their own area to guard away from your chickens, (generaly poultry and waterfowl do not mix well), if that is not possible, I would think about re-homing him/her to someone that have geese, they like to pair-up and generaly stay that way for life, good luck...

I tried having geese about 8 years ago and one got really aggressive as well. I finally had to get rid of him. I would have big bruises from him grabbing me and biting my legs, or whatever he could grab. I was afraid he would hurt a little kid bad. They are sure sweet when they are young though. Sebastapols are so pretty too!!
I have ducks now.

My mom was a rural route carrier for 30 years. She half a dozen times had folks with geese on their farms. One actually took a bite from her car tire while chasing her. They can sure be mean tempered sometimes, not sure why!?

Some geese are just mean. In my experience it is generally the males that are more aggressive and mean--although not always. I'd try finding a friend for your goose, doesn't necessarily have to be another sebastapol unless you just want one--your goose could just be lonely. Whenever we've had geese that were so mean you couldn't do anything or walk outside for them trying to get you we'd either get rid of them or eat them.

Geese even pets raised all come from a line of wild geese who are hardwired for aggressive behavior because of all the animals that consider they pray...I think if dogs,cat,bears,hawks, eagles, badgers ect were all your enemy you would always be on high alert....You can't change that behavior because its bred into them for their own protection...now if they would just get a clue to the fact that we love them, feed them ect they would be nicer....my male duck is that way....really bad during the mating season also then calms down for a bit then we are at the nasty biting bits again.....it hurts when he bites but thank goodness he can't take chucks out of my legs......Michele'

We have a goose pair (African). I haven't ever experienced any aggression. they are currently in mating season, and she has laid 5 (non-fertile) eggs. I moved her off of the nest today w/ no problems and then caught the gander and moved him out to the orchard with her to break the broodiness. I would imagine that geese are just like any other poultry...some individuals are going to be more aggressive. I have had SEVERAL roosters that I have re-homed due to the fact they were going after my kids and my youngest is still not quite old enough to be 'okay' with chasing them with a stick!
As far as the geese go, people can pretty much do anything with them, but put a dog into the picture, and they go NUTS. Extremely vicious. Frankly, when I have an aggressive animal, it's either in a stewpot or it's rehomed, for the safety of my kids.
