I'm going to be picking rasberries this weekend. Hopefully lots. Besides jam, which I always make, have any of you got some other great ways to cook and/or preserve these? Thank you.

I have to tell you all this story, it's kind of funny really. And it has to do with raspberries. I used to have a "boyfriend" (for want of a better term) he traveled all over the country and never actually lived with me, he really lived out of his suitcase and his vehicle (but that is another long story) Anyway, he was always bringing stuff into my house, clothes, books, magazines, liquor........you name it. Well, he brought this bottle of brandy and I had been searching on how to make my own cordials, I had raspberries and I love raspberries!!! So the recipe I found called for raspberries and brandy..........I used the bottle of brandy he had left so I wouldn't have to go to the liquor store. Well, come to find out, it was a $300 bottle of very old and rare brandy. The cordial was absolutely FANTASTIC!! Guess he shoulda told me it was expensive, huh?

How lucky. Raspberries are my favorite. I can't get enough of them. As a child my mother baked me my own raspberry pies. I got to eat the whole thing. I love to spread the berries out on a cookie sheet and freeze them. After a few days they go into a container and I eat on them for the rest of the year. For breakfast I cover the frozen berries with a mixture of vanilla yogurt and coconut milk. I put them in apple pies, peach cobblers, breads, etc etc etc. Just about any place I can sneak them in. I do the same thing with blueberries. One year I put some in a jar and covered them with Everclear (180 proof liquir), the "juice" was to die for but the berries knocked you on your rear. Never tried that again. Enjoy you self.

I love raspberries, too. My grandmother's home grown raspberries! Alas, that is no more. I'd love to be a snow bird just for the summer fruit of the north. Come home to Texas with a truck load of apples for the winter.

Mary, the Everclear is just hysterical! Georgette, I'm sure you would have used the $300 brandy anyway....LOL.! As you describe it was well worth it!

My receipe is my mother's. I have no idea where she got it from. It is a fruit salad. So simple and so easy. Take any of the fruits you like and chop or not as in the case of raspberries, blueberries, blackberries. I always make sure I have a melon (cantalope, honeydew, watermelon) in the salad. If you add apples or bananas add them last as they brown the fastest. Pour a good orange juice over the fruit (about 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup) and toss. If I don't make this weekly I have a collective revolt in the house. I love this receipe when we have guests as everyone loves it, I get rave reviews, and they all want the receipe. The biggest joy is they can't believe it is that easy.

I'm so jealous, enjoy the fresh raspberries!

we have a HUGE hedge of raspberry bushes .. can't get to the 'back ones' cuz' they are 'prickly' .. but i guess those are the ones nature intended for the birds! i'll never make jam out of them. cuz' we eat them as we pick them! same for the blueberries! (i do save some for muffins and cobblers though!) xo

Thank you all. I'll start getting ready for tomorrow. We'll have to get out early and pick a lot of berries.

Georgette - Did the boyfriend have a major fit over the brandy!! Ha.
Mary - Whoa!

I agree fresh is best! When I get back home from pickin the first thing I do is put some in a bowl and mash them up, then add
honey (or sugar) and milk, and gobble that up. I like to make syrup out of them for ice cream topping, too. But my favorite
thing is Black Raspberry Wine - I have four gallons to go from last year. It makes a nice gift - rack off a small bottle to give to
someone who likes wine...or its a nice wine to serve to company. I went out gooseberry picking but didn't have much luck finding any this year...I like gooseberry meringue pie. I like the brandy/raspberry cordial story - ooooh wellll, too bad for him he didn't tell you it was expensive.
