Oh, my poor Momma Doxie Heidi is sick, I have just called the vet who will come out to the house. Gotta love those Country Vets. Anyway her whole left side of her face, eye and under her neck is all swollen. She is miserable, shaking her head, rubbing her face on the carpet. You know I will bet she got bit by a bee out on our deck, either that or abscessed tooth or ear infection. But, the vet will be able to tell and give her a shot or antibiotics. So, farmgirls you know what you can do for me, pray it is nothing serious. I am so worried, I have 4 dogs and a canary and I just get so upset when on of my babies are sick. Will let y'all know when the vet comes and goes, she is on another emergency call now for a Colicky Horse:-)
Here is Ms Heidi's picture see how miserable she looks!
Farmgirl Hugs,
Debbie

Debbie, so sorry she's not feeling well. It could be a bite of some sort. I have no idea what to do for her other than keep her comfortable and loved til the vet gets there. I hope he has already been there and found out what happened. It could be anything.

No, not here yet, still with the Colicky Horse. It will be another hour or so before she gets here.
Doesn't she just look so sad Kristin, she is resting right now in my rocking chair.

She does look sad. I hope she's not in alot of pain. Can you feel anything where it's swollen? Like bite marks? Maybe you could put an ice pack on it. Sending prayers up.

No, I do not feel anything nor do I see anything.
But, my Secret Sister sent me a butterfly boo boo ice pack for my knees, I have it in the freezer right now getting cold, so I do not think she will mind if I put it on Heidi.
Like you I am hoping it will help if she will let me hold it on her face:-)
Thanks Kristin for you concern you are so sweet.

Debbie

I'm so sorry Heidi feels bad Debbie. I'll send good thought to her. Do let us know how she is after the vet visits. We all love our four legged children and understand your fear on concern.
I agree with Kristin. Love her up while you wait.

Vet has just left, Heidi was bit by something and of course is having an allergic reaction to it. By the time Dr. Berg got here the other side of her face was all swollen as well as her neck. She got a dose of Benedryl (sp) and a steroid shot, vet said she will be all better in a couple of hours. Then my Golden Retriever had to have antibiotics for her ears as she is itching them a lot. So, now all 4 doggies are sleeping and we hope all will be well. My vet is so wonderful she only charged me an extra $40.00 for the Sunday Emergency Visit. If I would have taken her to a vet in town it would have been $150.00 for the Sunday visit, so I am very Blessed to have Dr. Berg.
Thanks for caring Farmgirls.
Hugs,
Debbie

Debbie,
I am so glad that she's OK. I always keep some Benedryl on hand. My dog Molly got stung last year and I had to pay tons of money to see a weekend emergency vet. My DD is a vet tech and she told me to keep the Benedryl around for this exact thing. My dog had to have a steroid shot too, just a little warning, it makes them pee a lot more.

Debbie I have been keeping your Heidi in my prayers. I would have also said a bite and I carrry Benedryl on hand for this types of issues... I had a llama who spent a summer attracting bees to him (I am deathly allergic so we sure had a time of it) and getting stung. He I think has learned his lesson but not until I lost my mind several times with him getting a eye swallon shut and a nose so swallon he had trouble breathing. I know what you mean about our four legged family members and give Heidi a big hug from me...
Take care and snuggle up with each other and rest.

Benedryl is great for snake bits also, will help control the swelling till you get to the vet for anti-venom...

Grace, keep plastic straws in differant sizes, if your llama gets stung again, and nostrils are swelling shut, putting straws in them (Make sure you leave a couple of inches hanging out) can make all the differance in the world...

Tina that is a great trick - a dear friend of mine who had a Llama bit by a snake did the same thing - I wrote that one down in my llama management book. I have them also in my vet kit in my truck - never know when you need to keep a hole open... Thanks for writing that out - good information to remember.

Okay ladies thank you so much, I appreciate the advice and concern. She is eating now but is still quite a bit swollen after 3 1/2 hours, is that normal or after this time should she be back to normal? I was going to give her another 1/2 hour or so before I call the vet.
She sure did not want the little cold pack on her jaw, she did not like it at all so I did not force it of course.
Thank you again and I will check in later.
Farmgirl Hugs,
Debbie

I'm glad to see the vet came. I would have thought the swelling would have been down by now. What did the vet say about it?

She said it would take a couple of hours for the swelling to go down then she would be back to normal. But, she is eating again"-)
So, I will give it a bit longer and see before I call the vet.

I am so thrilled - I told my three Great Pry's about your sweet one's situtation and so I know they will be thrilled to hear that she is all better... Today she will I guess be the queen of the house...

Yes, Grace she is and always is the queen of this house much to the dismay of our Golden Retriever. She sleep through the night right next to my side in the bed, so I am so thankful she is alright and to my Dear Vet who took time out of her Sunday with her hubby to take care of my baby.
Thanks so much again ladies.

Debbie

I am so happy for your little sweetie. I bet she is too. She better be careful outside from now on. It could have been a yellow jacket. Y'all have a great day.

I'm so glad it was something easily treated. I hope by now she is back to normal. Dianne is right about the steroids making her pee a lot. It also means she will drink a lot. Be sure she has more water than normal available. This will last several days.
I love the straw idea. I'll be sure to put some in our med bag.

No, sadly we do not know what bit her but I believe like you that it was a honey bee as we have lots of them here too. We fight with them every year, we do have yellow jackets as well so I have to watch out for them too.
She is so much better today Grace so I am so thankful. It worries me so when one of my babies are hurt.
How is the wind where you are? Not bad here yet but yesterday was absolutely horrible!
Have a beautiful sunny Colorado Day, aren't the blue skies beautiful today?
