Garden Gate:  Too late to plant?  |

I was away from home for awhile. Back now and want to plant a few herbs in containers, maybe even a few vegs on my balcony like last year. However, I started earlier that this before. Is it too late? Any thoughts would help!

It's never too late LOL!
But, you'll be better off if you check with your local extension agent or plant nursery to see what will grow best this time of year.
If you buy small plants from the nursery or garden center to transplant into larger containers, most herbs should be fine.

Snow peas and sugar peas have always been my infallible crop. It's one of the first things I grew in containers and I found them for be very fast growing and I love trellising them.

I'm plantin nearly my whole garden just in the last week. I wouldn't start tomatoes from seed if I were you, but if you bought plants you should be ok. I'm plantin most of my seed for fall harvests. I did get a few plants for summer yummy's as well, but most of my garden will be fall only.
If you're plantin containers right now you could maybe even keep things goin into the christmas season by bringin them in when the frosts get close and keepin them near the windows and such. Sometimes a late start can give you an indoor winter treat.

We're still waiting for it to quit raining so that we can just till up the garden. It's so wet in my garden right now that you sink several inches just standing there. Hopefully, we'll get everything done by the end of next week as it's supposed to be dry all next week. I just hope it's not too late for the seeds. We bought plants for the other things.

Because of the rain in our area and our schedules, we usually do not get our garden in until late May. I've noticed that store bought plants for us do better when we plant later. I only have about 5 years gardening experience, but it seems the hot dry days take a toll on the small seedlings vs. plants that are stronger/older we have purchased at the store.

No, I am still planting too. Especially herbs. They seem to grow pretty quickly.
