Yesterday was cold and rainy, and it was Sunday--and Saturday, I'd caught the CBS Morning show with this cute chef from the south, a new James Beard Award winner and her show recipe was Chicken and Dumplings. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/05/14/earlyshow/saturday/main20062882.shtml?tag=cbsnewsLeadStoriesAreaMain;cbsnewsLeadStoriesPrimary

Her recipe looked great--the whole menu did, but I couldn't find a pen, and I don't fool with online at home, so I just tried to replicate it from memory, and also consulted the good old Fannie Farmer cookbook for my dumplings, with a few modifications (buttermilk instead of sweet milk).

My father hated poultry of any sort, and my mother hated her mother's dumplings. So, we never EVER had it in our house when I was growing up, and that translated into never making it for my husband, even though it's his favorite dish. It always seemed like a lot of effort to me. But it isn't!

Can't believe it only took me 25 years or so to get around to making it :)

My grandmother made the best chicken and dumplings I've ever eaten. She taught me how to make them, so every once in a while I make a big pot. My husband wouldn't eat chicken and dumplings until a few years ago, several years after my grandmother died, (his mother makes the worst, I know why he didn't like them). I grew up eating them often, they are cheap to make and you can feed a large family for a little bit of money. They are one of my favorite meals just add a pan of corn bread and I am happy! I can't believe it took my husband 24 years to finally try some one's chicken and dumplings besides his mothers.

Sharon, it was certainly better than I thought it would be, having never made it before. Guess sometimes you gotta just jump in with both feet I think I really thought it was an all day effort. Seemed like I recalled my mom talking about my Grandmother's dumplings being an all day thing...My husband was thrilled. I think of it as a "cool weather" dish, but he said it was always his pick for his birthday dinner as a kid...in AUGUST!

Sharon--haven't made the tapioca yet, but I did get the stuff for it on Saturday at the grocery with full intention of doing it over the long weekend. That's going to be our Memorial Day "picnic" treat!

I'd really like to get this gals cookbook, and maybe even visit her restaurant next year on our way through NC to the Outer Banks. I love a diversion!!!!

Oh, I adore C&D!! And with all this rain and cold (?using the fireplace in mid-may?!) What a great supper idea! Honestly, I don't know if my DH likes them or not. He is always away in the winter for work. Spring is when he is home, but in this very un-sprung spring, I'll need to add it to the menu. It looks great. Good for you jonni

I have tried a zillion recipes for dumplings and none turned out like the ones I used to make at a restaurant when I was a cook there. Problem is it's been so long since I've worked there I can't remember the recipe and they were the best dumplings ever! I know there were eggs and flour (of course) but I don't remember if that was it or if there were something else. I love, love, love chicken and dumplings but I'm suffering on the dumpling part :) What did the recipe turn out like for the dumplings?
