When I went out to water the garden yesterday, I found this guy entangled in some bird netting I had put down over the cataloupe seeds because the birds kept digging them up as fast as I could plant them! I went in the house and got some kitchen tongs and my embroidery scissors and cut him free. About 2 hours later, when I went down to the barn to feed the baby goat boy, the silly snake was stuck in the bird netting again!! This time, when I went in for the tongs and scissors, I also grabbed the camera. He was stuck worse the second time. DH came home about then and was trying to help (he really, REALLY doesn't like snakes!). We got him loose but didn't get all the bird netting off and he kept getting the bird netting caught on the fence. DH went out a few minutes later and he was gone but I was feeling really bad that we hadn't gotten all the netting off. In the evening, after we fed the critters, I went to the garden to water a couple of things and there was ole snakey again  hung up on some wire trellis. Well, this time I held his head and DH was able to finally get all the bird netting off him. Needless to say, I took up the netting and threw it away! Ole snakey was heading east along the pasture fence the last time I saw him! By the way, it's kinda hard to tell from the pics but he was about 5-1/2 to 6 feet long!

Poor snakey. Glad he came back so you could get the rest of the netting off. Good for your hubby for working through his dislike/ discomfort! He was a big guy, must eat well.
The tears I shed then, watered the flowers I harvest now.

| This was why mice did not come to mind regarding your pepper plants disappering. Wow, glad you set him free, he is worth his weight in gold for keeping warm blooded pests outa your garden. |

Eghads, I would've probably fainted had I seen that out in my garden... Guess it's a good thing we live in a "city." LOL! Good Lord, Candy - is that snake poisonous or otherwise dangerous to humans??? He must really like you and your garden! I'm glad he's okay and that you all are, too! :) - Nini

Gopher snakes are pretty harmless except for the fact that they are big! I am glad everything ended up OK! ;)

I noticed right off that he wasn't a rattler! He would have been dead if he had been! I know that gopher snakes eat the mice that was why I went to such great lengths to set him free! I kept telling him "Now DON"T bite me and I'll get you out of this!" He never even offered to strike, good snakey! :)

Whew. I guess he's like our resident Black Rat Snake....I don't want to hurt him, and he won't hurt me, but he's a little too big for my liking! You were good to help him, though he sure wasn't "getting it" with that bird netting!!!

Yikes, Candy, I wouldn't have been around to know if it had rattles or not. Don't like ANY snake. There are snakes here in our area, from garter to timber rattlers. As a kid once had a next of baby rattles fall out of a loft as I was backing a tractor out of the shed. They fell on the hood of the hood of the tractor. If i had been a few seconds slower, they would have been on my head & neck. No no...don't like any snake. Glad you could do it though.
