I've planted a few herbs in some containers---but I live in an apartment and do not have a green thumb! But I would like to try my hand at growing my own sprouts---they're very hard to find fresh where I live and it seems like something I could manage.

I read the instructions in MaryJane's Ideabook---which inspired me to give it a try! If you were going to buy a sprouter, is there one you would recommend? What few seeds I've found locally are not organic and I would really prefer to use organic seeds. Is there a mail-order or web location that you would recommend? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Deborah, I buy organic sprouting seeds from www.groworganic.com They have a wide selection of seed mixes to choose from. I grow sprouts in a canning jar with a screen lid that belonged to my grandma. I gave my SIL a kit a few years ago that had three square stackable trays with a lide and she likes it, too. Maybe another farmgirl will know of a source closer to your neck of the woods.

Cheers! ~ Marilyn

Hi Deborah!

Some of those sprouting contraptions can be rather expensive. I think the cheapest way to go is to use a canning jar like Marilyn suggested above. You can find the screens at the following link. If you have a health food store near by, you may be able to get them there. Link: http://sproutpeople.org/supply/sprouters/lid.html

Since we are on the subject, my favorite sprouts to grow are the sunflower sprouts. They are meaty and huge. Link: http://sproutpeople.org/seeds/sunflowergreens.html).

Happy sprouting!
