Here's a link to a great article written by a new farmer who is a woman, and her woman farmer partner. Last year was their first season, and their perspective offers hope! I'm inspired by them-perhaps you will be too.

Thankyou Clare. I loved the article. It was so helpful to learn that others are starting out much the same way as I am and as several of my farm friends. It made me laugh and cry as I was transported back to many of my mistakes and challenges. I cried for happiness as we are really all on the same planet after all!! I am forwarding this link to my very special friend. I know she will relate to this.

Clare - being a born and bred Illinois girl, and also now living in a small city, I loved reading about the girls from Mokena, Illinois. They have made a farm and a living from that farm in the suburbs of Chicago! If they can do it, we all can! Thank you for the link!

Thanks for that link! It is so inspiring. "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again." I have to keep remembering to get up and try again when I fall. Little children don't seem to have a problem with keeping up their stubborn persistence. Neither do animals (just look at chickens, enjoying themselves all day pecking and hunting). We humans tend to sometimes wring our hands and feel helpless, but these two women I bet will be a great success because they enjoy themselves and they have no desire to give up. Some people in their shoes would have just wrapped it up after the first failed market day.

I love my chickens

Here is a saying I have taped up on my wall in my office that keeps me moving on in spite of the difficulties.
Suspend Disbelief
For right now, just suspend disbelief.
You do not have to be convinced that you can succeed in making a quantum leap, but do not keep on believing those old ideas you have been carrying around about your personal limits.
If it will make it easier, hold off for a while on believing anything.
Just ACT like you have complete faith.
Merely do what you would do if you knew you WERE going to succeed.
Behave like you have total conviction.
Doubt is what does the most damage. So do not give it any mental space. Proceed boldly, as if it in inconceivable that you will experience anything but a quantum leap.
IF YOU MUST DOUBT ANYTHING, DOUBT YOUR LIMITS

I think that the ladies in this article and countless others of us who keep on going have built in this type of thought process to our lives. If I ever find myself doubting or wanting to give up I just look at where I have come from and remember this little message. I look for solutions to get over the hump then instead of giving up.

What a wonderful quote. I just sent it to my office mail, will print it off and post it on my desk. Also sent it to my two daughters. Someday I'll be on my dream farm, whether it is 1/2 acre or 10 acres. I'm lucky to have a wonderful man in my life who is a farmer and lets me 'play' and help him as much as I can.

Looking for new beef recipes, frugal gardening tips, any and all tried and true ez home crafts & recipes.

Suzy - You are blessed to have a wonderful man in your life who is a farmer! I have a wonderful man too, although not a farmer, but he lets me "play" also and be at home with my garden and my grandbaby. What a blessing I thank God for everyday!

I too am and born and bred Illinois girl who moved to WA State 20 years ago. After living in the city for all that time we finally rented a house on 5 acres in a small town in WA. It is a blank slate and I'm in the planning stages. I hope to eventually own my own farm but for now I'm happy to be out in the country. Thanks for link to the article -- it was an inspiration and nice to read about IL girls. Kay

I was born and raised in Virden which is about 30 miles south of Springfield. I also lived in the Peoria area before I moved out to WA in 1985. I really miss IL and wish I could live there again some day.
