| I was in Joann Fabrics for thread and the McCalls patterns wrer 99 cents but the price of fabric is sky high! I was shocked at simple cotton at $7.99 a yard, is there any alternatives that you girls use ? Joann is the only fabric store in this area and amish country is the next area for fabric, is there any good online fabric shops that are more affordable ? I have summer clothes I want to make but don't want to go broke in the process. thanks |

eBay is where I get most of my fabric,and I set the listings to show the lowest price first.You'll always get your best deal from the sewer wanting to clear out her closet as opposed to the ebay stores. try "fabric lot" in the ebay search,and you can add whatever style of print you're looking for to boot. Watch the shipping fees tho-some are outlandish.
My 2nd best source is yard & estate sales. Again,these peeps are willing to give it away just to get rid of it with no concern on making their $$ back. Thrift stores could be another source but I'm not sure on that. Hope this helps!

I get most all of my fabric from thrift stores. Our little local store has 3-4 yard pieces sometimes for 50 cents to $2. Even Value Village sometimes has decent pieces for reasonable. I am lucky because our Walmart still has a fabric section and the prices are really good for their fabric too. Hancock fabrics just had a dollar daze sale and I happened upon it and spent too much! They had $1, $2, $3 a yard tables. Once garage sale season gets started, I'll be looking at those for supplies too!

The price of cotton has been going up and up - it is set to go even higher in September(of course back to school). I try to go into the back sale section at JoAnne's. That is the closest fabric store for miles and miles. They took the fabric section out of our Walmart(arrgh)!

I've been happy with the fabrics I've purchased there. I usually try to order their discounted fabrics. I've found 108" cottons very reasonably priced. Free shipping over $35. |

| thanks for the suggestions, they took the fabric out of our Walmart too and I used to find some good deals there, we don't have Hancock anymore. will check out fabric.com, sometimes I find pieces at our thrift stores but not too often. |

wow! the similarities between us farmgirls still suprises me some times...even after 6 years! i too buy my fabric at thrift stores and yardsales while picking up specialized pieces on ebay. the little girls collection i am doing for sping is almost all vintage or repurposed fabric.

you can also buy dresses or things at thrift stores and re use them by cutting the fabric back to what you want. Cause the prices are just going to get higher....

don't forget sheets & pillow cases as fabric......
as for buttons, I check the thrift shops for garments with interesting buttons, especially on special sale days.
I bought a bridal gown, years ago, for $8 and re-purposed the lace, buttons & satin.... (one of the things I made was a Ring Beares Pillow with the satin & lace.)
even heavy duty zippers can be re-purposed from old garments.

When we got to Amish country I always stop by here, they have some fabric for 3-4 a yard in one of the back rooms. They also have a basement (which I have never been in) but they have a huge store.

Patricia, I actually buy cotton wholesale for my company and have just croaked over the price. Wholesale cotton price has gone up 2 1/2 times what I was paying in November. It's awful. I am so glad that I stocked up back in November for at least 8 months because I'd be in real trouble. At least this way, I won't have to raise prices anytime soon. I hate it for all of you seamstresses and quilters out there.

Sign up for Joann coupons if you haven't already. Get them via mail and email. My local Joann's doesn't care if you use multiple coupons on the same order. Fabric.com is a wonderful place to shop. They sell quilting and dressmaker fabric. You can often find nice fabric at $4/yard. Sign up for their emails so you don't miss a sale. Someartfabric.com also puts fabric on sale for deep discounts from time to time.
Prices at my local Goodwill on clothing aren't all that fabulous. It is a great resource for stuff I use to decorate my school library, though - stuffed animals, decor items and odd sheets to use as drop cloths. |

| you all are so helpful, thanks, I think a trip to Salvation Army is in store for me this week. I did make bedroom curtains out of sheets for the kids since we moved and they look pretty good if I do say so myself ! |

I use sheets, curtains, and sometimes I can find cloth shower curtains that are made with good fabric from the thrift stores. I,too, look for clothing that is cheap and has interesting buttons. We have a WalMart here that was able to keep the fabric department because so many women called up and protested. The store is located in an area that has no other fabric stores within an hours drive. I am so thankful.

We have a discount fabric store in our city, but I still don't find the prices overly low though their sales are really good.
I find the prices of patterns ridiculous though. It used to be more cost effective to make your clothes now it's not.
