I made some western hats for the Farmgirls on the Loose, Wild West Roundup and thought I would share here also. I made two pink ones for CJ and her daughter to wear at their breast cancer walks. I also made a lavender one for my Wild West trip partner, Wende. I am working on one for me now. As soon as I can get my DD to model, I will post some more pictures. They are made with paper raffia, a little tricky to crochet with but well worth the struggle.

Those hats are sooo cool. When you say paper raffia, will it stand up to moisture like rain or sweat?

Kathy,
It does pretty well with sweat, they are so airy you don't even know you are wearing them. They also are color fast and if they get really wet you just re-shape and dry.

The pattern is from the Crochet Asylum at www.crochetasylum.com. I get my raffia from www.nashvillewraps.com they are the best price and lots of colors. Make sure you get the paper wraffia. It is made from 100% renewable resources and is color fast. I had to tweek the pattern a little. I dropped three rows of single crochet or they are too tall. I dropped row 11,14 and 17. If you are looking up the pattern go to the website and click on M.E.Nolfi designs. The patterns are really nice and clear and come laminated.

I am sorry, another farmgirl let me know that the pattern is sold out! If you are interested in the pattern for the western hat or the wide-brim sunhat, I will send it to you. I will make some copies tomorrow at work. Just e-mail your address to me.

Lea,
I think the raffia is a little too tough for knitting needles. It is pretty challenging to work with even with a crochet hook. I was just looking for something that would hold it's shape better than yarn.

Lea....chain stitch is the hardest part of crochet. learning additional stitches shouldn't be a problem at all. look on youtube for turtoils or pick up a copy of The Adenturous Crocheter by Delia Brock and Lorraine Bodger, its out of print, but there are always copys on amazon.

Since some of you have been asking for the pattern for the wide brimmed sun hat, I thought I would share some pictures of a few that I have made. I also want to stress how important it is to get the right raffia. www.nashvillewraps.com has it for $3.00 a 100 yard roll. You will need 3 rolls for each hat. 2 is almost enough, but not quite. Also it is tough to work with, but you get used to it after awhile.
