This morning as I was getting started to milk Sandy, I noticed her udder looked kind of weird. I milk from the left so she's standing toward me so it's her left side. Her left udder, at the base near the teat, has this round disk like thing. That's what it felt like. Right at the base of her udder. I could still squeeze the teat but not all of it. And usually in the morning, even with the kids on all the time, I get about a quart and 1/2 from her. But this morning only about a 1/2 cup. Her udder is not swollen and it's not hard or red. Obviously the kids are nursing her. The milk is also not bloody. Still white. But I gave it all to the animals. I should have tasted it first.
Then Abby, who usually looks like a cow udder, she hardly had any either. Then as I was checking her I felt a lump on her left udder. It's up farther than Sandy's. And not as big. And it's soft. Both goat's udders are soft. Not hard and red. But normal other than the big lump on Sandy's and the knot on Abby's.
So what could this be and what should I do? It looks like maybe Sandy could have been bitten, but it's not red or anything wrong that I can see other than I felt it. I mean, right away I could tell something wasn't right by looking at it first. But other than that, pretty normal.
I will be gone most of the day but will have to come home between 10 and 1 for a delivery. Mrs. T's daughter has gotten us a chest freezer! Because they are still without power there and I had Roxie the heifer, in the freezer at her house. I have brought it all home but my freezers are stuffed full. So anyway, I will check back then to see if I need to go buy anything for them. I am worried now.
Any help would be great! Thanks.

good morning kris, so sorry to hear you have challenges. it is always something. you know all the stuff i do and more. so i am not much help. i think lots of extra milkings and warm udder balm with mint would help congestion.how is mrs. T? hope it all milks out for you. i will watch other answers too. i am always learning here. sherrye

Kris does it feel kinda like a doughnut shaped hardness just above the teat? I have had that happen before. It the start of edema. Its very hard to get milk out of them and letting the kids nurse them will help. I usually put warm compresses on them and massage the bag and put pepperment oil mixed with a carrier oil... whatever you have on hand will do. Unless you have an udder cream already mixed with pepperment oil. I would do this twice a day and also maybe give her 2 advil twice a day. Hopefully it won't get worse and the doughnut shaped edema will soften up.Its takes a little while for it to go away. Make sure you don't put pepperment mix on the teat if the kids are nursing because it can burn their eyes.
I have seen the does where the teat looks totally deflated right below that ring like it won't let the milk pass. It makes it very hard to milk them. I don't know what causes this kind of edema but its sure is weird. good luck and if you need to talk I will give you a jingle.

Well, shoot! That is what it feels like and looks like. A doughnut. I have peppermint oil. I did milk her out just now. SHe seems fine with it. She was not full at all. Thank you both. I will try the oil. I have been milking them both twice a day since they kidded. Sandy's will be 2 weeks old Sunday and Abby's are 2 weeks a few days ago. So I wanted to put the kids up at night to milk in the morning. But I guess I should wait tis Sandy is better. I will call you this weekend when calls are free.
It is my youngest granddaughter's 8th birthday tomorrow. She wanted me to tell you all. So we have a party to go to Sat.

how fun for you all. i love parties. i am watching the grands tonight. they will be holding bambi. i hope it clears up for you kris. i have no more ideas. keep us posted we are always learning from each other. happy days sherrye

Sherrye, we haven't had rain since Wed. and all the storms. It's almost dried up here. I think Linda has been flooding in Ohio. I hope it's stopped for her and her goats.
I am milking her twice a day. Milk is coming out and it doesn't seem to hurt her. I am rubbing peppermint oil on. I hope this helps.

Kris is her doughnut shaped edema getting any better? If you can put a hot moist towel on those areas even if its only a minute or two. It really helps break it up along with the advil. Make sure you don't put the peppermint oil on straight or it could really irritate her skin. Mix it with olive oil or whatever you have on hand.
The rain stopped here for the past 2 days. Worked on shoveling mud and mowing. I am so tired tonight and sore I feel sick. I am going to go soak in the bathtub with epson salts and essential oils and then off to bed.
Its almost midnight here and I can't believe I am still up but we had to go to my sons house tonight to dehorn their little oberhaslie/nubian cross babies. They sure are super cute.
Rain is suppose to move in tomorrow not sure for how long. Missed the news tonight guess I will catch it in the morning. Nite all.
