I'm ordering some khaki campbells soon (ducklings) and I have the baby setup squared away but hubby and I are still discussing our adult duck housing. I'm building a large mobile wire frame so I can put them out anywhere in the front of back yard without being molested by dogs (neighbors, maybe mine since I don't know how they'll behave around adult birds) and to keep them from pooping in my pool.
We are planning to build a duck house near the horses with a yard and a pool for them (bigger than the small one that goes with the mobile cage during the day) and of course shelter. I've see a lot of duck houses on the web but I'm not sure what will have the balance of frugal vs. necessary protection. I have snakes, hawks and occasional coyotes and dogs, but no weasels, foxes or raccoons to protect them from.

We built our duck house out of a large thin wooden crate that clay machines came in (it was free from my brother in law), DH put some wood on the front of it and left a small door for the ducks and then cut a larger side door in it (this was after we realized how friggin hard it was to get eggs and ducklings out of the front!) We also have a small shed like thing (also a freebie) that has 2 sides and a top that we put in the pen with them to get under. They seemed to like the 2 sided thing in general better than the house, but once the ladies started laying they loved the house. We of course had this in our duck yard. I think a large dog house would also work well.

we used a dog kennel setup, buried fencing around it, and installed a little pool. We also had a little house for them inside of the metal kennel. Over all of that we put up a tarp. In the winter we used a electric water bucket so the water didnt freeze, and a heat lamp. They were pretty well taken care of. Connie
