I am so upset--I feel so terrible and helpless. Our lawclerk, who works in the basement with me was just let go. I was heating up my lunch, one of the associates came down and told me and sort of loomed in my office. When I went to talk with him, thinking he needed something, he told me he needed to talk with her...and then she came out crying, shaking, with her key in her hand and thanked me for being nice to her and that today was her last day. She said they had to "revise her work" too often, but noone ever told her that. They simply revised her work, I guess, but didn't care enough about her to help her understand her mistakes.
I swear, she's such a nice girl, and so smart--I feel like, at times, this is a very male dominated world and they SUCK at communication. Sorry for the vent--it just would have been nice to have been asked to go upstairs or whatever, so I didn't have to be so awkward and feel so helpless. Bless her, what a sucky start to her Easter holiday.
I did jot down my number and address asking her to Easter supper because her family lives in Flint, MI and she wasn't heading back home...

Am so sorry you had to witness that situation and that you are upset, Jonni. I know exactly how she is feeling....I had same experience....not realizing I was making the same couple of mistakes repeatedly.....they dropped the axe on me one day. And could have easily been remedied if I had just been informed!!!!! That's Ok.......when ever one door closes another opens. Hope she does join you for Easter dinner.....you are a good friend.
My best to all, Mel

I'm so sorry YOU had to experience that, Mel. It's really so frustrating to me. I realize that many work environments are imperfect, but I find that the legal field can really be challenging for a female. Added to that, she was soft spoken and well, she was just run over.
I hope she takes me up on my offer, but I'll certainly understand if she doesn't.

That is so sad, Jonni! I wish people understood how simply helping someone be better can be mutually beneficial in the long run. If you coach and train an individual instead of getting frustrated- often times they are more loyal in the end!

That's so sad. I work in an office and know that some people are horrible at communicating with their assistants and never offer any input if they've made a mistake. It is not fair to the assistant because eventually she is blindsided that there was a problem with her work which could have been easily fixed had she known.

Jonni~ That was so kind of you to invite her for Easter and give her your phone number. How horrible for her to have this happen to her in this manner. I have to agree with you on one fact (I am not man bashing just stating a fact) men are not really great at communication. They just aren't. Besides that fact - what a terrible way to run any kind of an office. I was principal in an elementary school for many years and we had our fair share of people, who at first, didn't seem to have everything down. But you know what - you sit down and talk to them andhelp them correct their mistakes - or at the very least just making them aware of mistakes often helps them to self correct. After a while (usually) problem solved - and you have another great worker to help you out.
Did she ever have any performance reviews? Just wondering out loud...

That poor girl! What an unfair way to give someone the boot. You'd think they would have told her what she was messing up on. I've had female bosses be so vague that you may as well be talking to the fog. Really sweet of you to invite her for Easter tho. Hopefully she'll find work soon.

Ever notice how "they" usually fire someone on a Friday?? I worked at a local clinic for 2-years did my work well, LOVED my co-worker sisters and then 20-minutes before I left for the day one of the dr's asked me in his office and said they had decided to go with another transcriptionist who apparently agreed to work for less pay than I was getting. I was DUMBFOUNDED, left his office with several of my co-workers hot on my heels and I blubbering saying I didn't want to go. How awful is that? 20-minutes before I left for the day. When I asked him when should I turn in my key he said "before you leave today." It took me many years to get over that. You would think a doctor would have more sensitivity than that...I feel so bad for you co-worker. I know what she is going through. And, it was very thoughtful of you to invite her over you are a dear and compassionate woman Jonni!!

That's terrible! Both in the way it was done and on a Friday before Easter.
Personally, I think the guys do know how to communicate but it's easier to be blunt and they can put it out of their minds.
Once I had the same happen but the LADY who was firing me said that (are you ready?) A big ice storm was coming and she didn't want me to drive into town for a while. I suspected what she was doing and asked her when I should come back. She said she'd call me. Now, since I'm a literal person, I actually called her to remind her to call me! Several times. Finally she said to come back but by then I had figured it out and said no. Kinda dumb but it felt good.

I've been a "big city" psych Rn "forever." In 1 deluded moment I went to work for a Nursing home administration in a small southern town. I loved my job and did it really well (so they said) for almost a year. The Director went out on sick leave almost as soon as I started. While she was gone she "rethought" what she wanted my job to be and told me about my new job description when she returned. I did let her know (kindly that was not what she hired me for and not a job I was really interested in.) When I had no choice I resigned and gave my 2 weeks (professional) notice. They asked me to sign a "no sue" notice. (I told them I wasn't the kind of person who would sue for much but I wouldn't sign a notice.) They had SECURITY escort me off the premises THAT day! I couldn't believe it. I cried for days. I'm sorry for your co-worker and for you. What a difficult situation. I do believe though that when God closes a door he opens a window. I hope things go well for her. Joey

That is horrible...and devastating for your co-worker too. It is so unfair to be treated like that. You are very kind to invite her to Easter supper. I hope she comes.....that would be good for her. Sadly, she will remember that moment for the rest of her life and will probably be always questioning herself for a long time. I highly dislike people who do this....there was definatly a better way to handle that situation....so sorry....Erica:) |

I agree - I am tired of men using the "poor communicator" saga as a way to just act poorly. I worked as a paralegal and office manager for sometime and spent my entire work life dealing with mostly men - if they think their smarter then the rest of us the get those verbal skills going. If you make a living using words then that applies to using them with the folks who work for you. I am so sorry for the gal but if I could say one thing it would be life will give you a better place. I too hope she takes you up on your offer and you are such a kind person to offer. I wish you all a great weekend and just know those folks who act poorly will get theirs even if we are not there to see it. Blessings and Happy Easter
