I find this badge difficult, and expensive to complete.
Expert Level
* Build your own wall tent or buy a vintage camp trailer. * Learn to catch and then cook the catch of the day.
Just the wood alone for our split barn door, we spent about $100.00, and still have another much larger door to build. Not to mention the chicken coop for the meat chickens. I would love to buy a vintage trailer or build a wall tent, but with 6 kids and being a stay-at-home mom, I find this badge beyond our spending limits. Anyone else finding a level of badge that requires a purchase of this sort difficult?

Hey Kristina,
Let me see what I can come up with.

"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects."

Okay here's what I got so far. How about an outdoor kitchen with a bbq pit/fire pit area? There's even a section on building a backyard lean-to in the Outpost book that the kids could help you with. It wouldn't be necessary to build a whole campground but a picnic area might be more doable maybe even a canopy. I'm not sure how much space you have to play with but the lean-to wouldn't take up much room, let me know if that'll work. Thanks.

Don't know if it is still up there but AOL had a topic today on this guy building houses from trash (wood, fixtures, etc.) that were taken from the trash dump. Don't know if this would help you but the houses shown were cheap and really kool! He was all self taught too. Joey

You can make a ton of really sturdy structures using free pallets. Ask on free cycle, also ask on free cycle for a free trailer, and such.

That's a great idea about the pallets, Heather. Our February-March issue had an article about building a barn out of pallets.

Beleive it or not we built a addition to our cabin using free wood pallets, and free windows. (I find a lot of free windows on freecycle now, back then we just curb shopped on garbage day! lol)

I'm glad to know MJF is open to alternatives. I had read this one and thought "That's something I have no interest/need for." Yeah! I love this place! Connie
