One of my broody year old cochins has clear, thick, (looks like snot) off-smelling secretions from her vent. She was fine yesterday and today I noticed the flies bothering her. I picked her up and saw this. What do I do? I give apple cider vinegar in the water all the time. The other hen sharing her run/nesting box has a normal dry vent. Do I separate the two hens? |

sounds like she might have a broken egg inside or an invection due to a broken egg, usually all you can do is watch and wait, and hope for the best, or find a vet that treats birds/poultry....

I am sorry, I agree with bear5. IT sounds like a broken egg. You can try some water soluable tetracycline. Good luck.

Thank you ladies! After I calmed down and was methodically cleaning the hen, I lifted a section of skin and there was her vent-healthy, moist and clean! Suddenly everything became clear. A few days ago the head bitty pecked this hen as they were fighting over a blueberry. I knew it hurt but didn't think anything of it. Now I know that the skin was torn near the oil gland which in turn swelled so much, it covered the vent. I washed out the growing wound again this morning and tried to clean it as much as possible. The hen is eating, I have her in a kitty carrier in the garage to help protect the wound from flies and others. Then I called the vet and asked for suggestions. She told me to buy Betadine from any drugstore (add it to water until the water becomes tea colored) and to wash to wound with that until healed. So here goes...always a learning curve. |
