That is just TOO funny, Karen! She probably is a farmgirl! LOL!
When I was a young girl, my Grandma took me for a big trip to downtown Providence (RI) to buy me my first pair of clogs, which were all the rage. My parents were of a modest income, struggling to make ends meet with three kids; so having such an extravagant pair of shoes was simply out of the question. My Grandmother, however, had scrimped and saved all summer long, pinching and rolling pennies to ensure that I'd have the perfect pair of clogs to start the new school year. Unaware of her plans for our big excursion, I went to spend the night with her and my Grandpa, as I often did back then. Imagine my shock and surprise when she announced her special surprise at dinner! I was excited about the shoes, of course, but taking a bus to the big city - just Grandma and me - was such an exciting prospect! I could hardly sleep with anticipation. The next morning, we donned our dressy best and waited for the bust to arrive... I remember my wonder at all the city sights and smells and sounds as we stepped off the bus in Providence. We were absolutely bubbling over with chatter about where we'd go, what we'd have for lunch, etc. Carefully looking both ways before proceeding (as she had always taught us from the time we were little), we started to cross the main street over to the mall area. Suddenly, out of nowhere, some nutcase came flying down the street in his flashy sports car, blaring his horn, swearing at us like a drunken sailor, causing us to stop short in our tracks right smack dab in the middle of traffic. An indescribable firey gleam manifested in my sainted Grandmother's eye at that very moment. I couldn't believe what I was seeing, for this was my beloved Grandma, whom I had always known to be a gracious, gentle, Godly woman. She took two fiercely determined steps toward the vehicle, hauled off and punched the man in the head, right through the car window, all the while spewing a couple of non-repeatable expletives that, until then, I had only ever before heard my father use while repairing a nasty plumbing issue. Without a seeming second thought, she immediately reached straight back for her hatpin. I'll never forget the stunned and horrified look on the guy's face - the memory makes me laugh to this day! Seeing that hatpin coming toward him, he flipped up his arm to protect his head, and gunned the gas pedal, I like to imagine never to be seen again. My petite little Grandmother bravely turned, straight-shouldered and solid as a rock, glaring daringly at the other cars surrounding us. There were no "takers," to be sure. Regaining her composure, she gracefully replaced her hatpin, straightened out her hat, reached down pulling to neaten her dress, gently grabbed my hand and proceeded toward the fancy shops as if nothing ever happened, discussing where we might go for breakfast after church the next morning. Not a car moved until our feet hit the curb. Now, THAT, my friend, is moxie!
One thing I learned that day for sure: you don't mess with Grandmas.... And MY Grandma ROCKED! :)
Hugs -
Nini
