| anyone have a green way of unclogging drains ? this is the last few days in our apartment and the shower drain is clogged, actually it seems like the kitchen sink/garbage disposal is backing up thru the shower. it is totally gross I have gone thru two bottles of drain stuff from the store and no luck, it'll take two days for them to get a plumber out here and by then we'll have started our move. I saw something about baking soda and vinegar but don't know how much of each thanks |

I use baking soda and white vinegar.Not only does it unclog the drain it gets rid of any icky smells. I usually pour in one small box of baking soda and then one large jug of white vinegar(not all at once). Watch the reaction and slowly pour more wv in. After the wv has done its job I turn on the hot water and for about a minute or so to rinse away everything.

Try putting two Alka Seltzer tablets in the drain and a small amount of water. Let it sit for half an hour & then run hot water for about 5 minutes or so. You may need to get professional help though if there is a serious problem going on with the drains.

| In most homes the things that are clogging your shower and bathroom drains are a combination of soap and hair. There are a number of little brushes that you can purchuse that will fish out the "GROSS" string of hair, some of which can be found at the dollar store. If you have a wire clothes hanger you can carefull try getting a hold of this mess and pull it out. I just had a client pay a plumber all of $150 to come and do the same thing that I told him he could do. He said next time he would have me do it and pay me instead. There are some very good enzyme drain cleaning products on the market, you make up this milkshake looking and smelling concotion and pour it into your drains at night and let it work overnight. It only digests organic waste and will not harm your plumbing pipes. I used to use this eveny Friday evening in the food plant that I worked at to keep our floor drains clear. The roto roter man hated me. |

I second the Alka seltzer-also, baking soda and vinegar! Another thing, is I'll usually undo the little stopper thing in the bathroom sinks or undo the traps once a year or so and try to clean it out from there with whatever I can get in there! LOL

If you take a hanger, unbend it, then make a partial loop at one end, like a hook. Put this down the shower drain you can pull up the hair and grey gross gook that is clogging the pipes.
Do this for all your drains. You'll be amazed at what you pull out.
Be careful if you have put Draino or any of those other caustics down there.
You'd be amazed at how well this trick works. I've done it at several rentals and had the drains running clean in one work.

I just had a huge round with my shower drain last weekend. Went through several cups of baking soda and 3 gallons of vinegar--my drain has never drained so well (even when it was new, lol) I'm now making it a habit to do this at least weekly to keep the drain open.

Martha Stewart says to pour a few cups of boiling water down the drains, this help to break up the oils.

You have no doubt moved already and no longer need this help, but for anyone else with this prob: I also use baking soda, and vinegar. pour baking soda in the drain, and after pouring on some of the vinegar, I hold a plug, or wadded up rag, over the hole, and it sends all the churning mixture downward, which gives it more power to clean the drain. I have used this method on a very stubborn tub drain, with using a plunger in between "treatments", which helped loosen the "gunk" up inside. I love my Baking Soda and my Vinegar!
