Hi Farmgirls,
Many of you probably already know about this book - or don't need it! - but I thought I'd post this for the few urban farmgirls like me who may need a little help with DIY projects. My mother-in-law gave this book to my husband for his birthday and we absolutely love it:

I love this book!! I bought it at Costco a year ago and have turned to it so often that the pages are become a bit tatty.
It is a great bbok for urban or country farmgirls!!

This is a GREAT book!! A good friend of mine gave it to me, cause she had an extra one, and it has come in handy on many occasions!

I bought this book, after I saw your posts. I skimmed through less than half of it, and boy am I excited. It teaches you so much stuff that I have always wanted to learn. Unfortunately, I don't come from a family that does "farmgirl
stuff", so I have never had anyone to teach me how. Other than good cooks and crocheting, that is about all I know. This book is wonderful, and well worth every penny I paid for it! Thanks for the tip, Catherine!! |

| Oh Melissa, I'm so glad you got it too! My family isn't "farmgirl-friendly" either (very friendly, they just think I'm weird with all of this DIY stuff), so I adore the book. When my sister and I learned how to knit from a community ed. class about 5 years ago, my mom said "oh, I guess I could pull out my old knitting needles for you two..." Our jaws were on the floor...WHAT? You knew how to knit and never showed us? Oh well...my mom likes eating my food as she needles me for being a Suzy Homemaker. :) |

| Yes, my mom almost makes fun of me when I tell her something that I have "cooked" up. My husband does, too, all the while he is trying the hair rinses, essential oils, and other things! My mom tught me to crochet, but my granny doesn't even know how to do that. I think one of my mom's sister taught herself to sew on a machine. My Granny used to can stuff alot, now is she puts any food up, she just freezes it. I can't wait to start trying some of the stuff that I have read in this book! BTW, Catherine, be watching your mailbox for some snail mail!!! |

It is a very good book, I think it's better then the Readers Digest hard cover book that has EVERY old time craft, it gives more info. It's good to see farmgirl talk and exceitment about a book like that. Good luck w/ it.

Melissa, do you have Carla Emery's "THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF COUNTRY LIVING"? I read about it on this forum and got it through Amazon. It is tremendous, very far ranging. We also have the Reader's Digest book (I'm pretty sure it's the same one Michele mentioned.) Wherever did I put it? When I find it, I'll check back to see if you've heard the title yet.

| Ann, Amazon suggested that book when I bought the Country Wisdom and know how. I didn't buy it. Darn it! Wish I had now! Guess I will just have to go back to Amazon! Thanks. |

The Reader's Digest book we have is called "BACK TO BASICS".... and I'd expect you to be able to get it used. I know that feeling of having missed a good chance... especially with Amazon's free shipping deal. Oh, RATS! ;) I don't have the Country Wisdom book, but anything done by Storey Books just has to be great. Their books are so well organized that you can get a specific answer fast. The 'Encyclopedia' book is one to relax and enjoy... and to re-read.

Oh I LOVE books!!!
My favorite ones are some already mentioned...Back to Basics and Encyclopedia of Country Living (it is so great!! and the last edition has websites listed!),and Sucessful Small Scale Farming. The Storey book I just borrowed from the library the same time I borrowed MaryJanes book!! So I have not made it through those yet but may have to buy and add them to my library! I also love the Reader's Digest books, 1001 Hints and Tips for the Garden , and their guide/handbook to Organic gardening. I have more I just love but they are in the States in storage and I can not remember their names...  ... one of them was a book of knowlege form old gardeners...but dont remember the name. Then Of course it may not be that great in the knowledge area but what farm gal could be without the Little House series?!? LOL Ohhh and what about the Foxfire series? That one should be great too! Well that is my one cents worth from a wanna be farm gal who has read till millions of cows have come home several times over!!  Have been wanting this since I was like 14 years old. As a kid Back to Basics was my favorite book and as soon as I was old enough to make my own money I bought my own copy so I could highlight and underline and make notes...see how much this is in my bones??

When I was reading above about the "book of knowledge from old gardeners" I thought - could that be one of the Foxfire series? Those are SO interesting to me, too.
What great suggestions!!! I ordered "Country Wisdom and Know-How" because of this thread, and I can't wait to receive it.
