I live in zone 5 and was wondering if anyone in same area has rhubarb coming up yet or do I need to slow down a bit and wait awhile? I'm asking because I can't find it yet and am not certain I'm looking in the right area of my garden...

Thanks for posting this topic, Sandy! I just bought seeds to plant rhubarb for the first this year - I would love to know how best to actually grow it, too! :) - Nini

Sandy: You're lucky you are in a warmer zone. Rhubarb is so delicious fresh from the garden. We still have about 3 feet of snow on the rhubarb so ours won't be up for a while but that just makes us appreciate it more when it does come up. Happy eating. Bonnie

I'm in Ohio and checked mine, nothing yet. From what I understand your supposed to wait till the 2nd year to harvest? So Nini, you might not get any the first year, and, I had a very hard time starting from seed. Slow, but worth the wait!

My calendar reminds me that this time last year my rhubarb was up here in zone 5/Billings MT... but boy howdy it sure isn't this year! This year has been one of the worst Montana's had in a long time though... they're talking about farmers having to delay wheat and peas, which is a pretty big deal looking at how much spring wheat Montana produces for the world!! yikes. So considering that, I'm trying not to pout about my rhubarb. SIGH. I guess I could use some of that old frostbitten stuff in the freezer... grin...

Janie - thank you for that! I am such a noobie with a lot of these plants. I was just reading up on rhubarb and did see that I probably won't get to enjoy it for another year. But I'm glad to know it can be started from seeds! I'll be patient, and I'll feel a lot better during the wait because you've shared this with me! Thank you! - Nini

| The main thing I know that rhubarb likes is chicken poo. This is actually my 3rd year of it but last year had a very meager show of leaves. Also didn't give it any chicken poo 'til last fall. And last year it kept getting backed over. Im growing it for 3 reasons. 1 It doesnt need weeding. 2 It makes a great border plant. 3 I plan to use the leaves to make a mildew spray. Has anyone else done this? As for eating rhubarb let me say this...YEUCK!! I try it a differnt way every year but never have found a way I like it. But it sure sells good at market! sandy |

Started poking around in the garden last weekend. My rhubarb is starting to poke little leaves up. My garlic bulbs that I planted late last fall have two inches of new leaves sticking out of the straw mulch. I am so ready to get more going!

Saw this post yesterday and it got me to wondering so I stopped by my garden today. My rhubarb plants are just beginning to send out leaves. The shoots are up about two inches already. Hard to believe...it has been so cold and rainy here lately! My garlic and onions are doing well too. Amazing how much they've grown since I checked on the garden three weeks ago!

I'm in Colorado and took a look at ours yesterday. Yup, we have growth. the big bulbs and even a few small leaves! Very exciting. Today I'm going to make a rhubarb crisp (last years frozen) for mom as she gets home after being off playing for months.

My rhubarb is still under several feet of snow. Zone 4 here. But it always comes back.

Well temps yesterday hit about 72 degrees so I probably won't have to wait much longer.
Nini- let us know how it goes planting that rhubarb from seed.
Marilyn- you are so lucky to live in such amoderate climate, heck in two weeks you will probably be eating fresh rhubarb.

Ours is slowly poking through the ground. last year I had 3 harvest from one plant :)
Does anyone know if I can divide the plant and re-plant this Spring? I would like to divide if I can and grow more plants to share.

We have had gray, and rain, and a little snow, for about 3 weeks straight so I hadn't even hoped for rhubarb, however I checked and there are little leaves coming up so I guess spring is going to show up at some point - very encouraging!!

Still no rhubarb, but the weedy grass is up in my garden. What's the deal with THAT?!

I live just southwest of Chicago and my rhubarb always takes a long time to come up. Just when I think it didn't make it, it pops up. Be patient and give it time, especially if you just planted it last year.
I have been watching my rhubarb too even though I know it is too early yet, no matter how warm it's been!
