Ok....I've been craving sauerkraut and metts like my mom's elderly neighbor used to make (she's now passed on) and noone else likes it in my family, so I don't really "know" how to make it...

I bought some really good metts at the butcher and I recall Nancy putting a little apple and some caraway seed in hers. No onion, at least, I don't think...

Do you cook yours in a crockpot? What I DO want is for the metts to sortof fall apart. That's how hers always was, anyway.

Help...first time for everything!!!

Laila - I didn't know either, so I looked it up... Mettwurst is a type of German sausage. I've never had it before, but I found this link, and now I really want to try it! 'Makes me want long for a day at the ballpark!

Yep, Mettwurst. We call them Metts, here in this VERY German enclave of Cincinnati :)

My mom's neighbor was 100% German and she made her sauerkraut like her mother, Ruby. The metts are cooked simultaneously with the sauerkraut, but I don't know if she simmered them on the stove, used a crockpot, or what? The metts were SO tendered, they literally fell apart when you picked them up with a fork. SO good and so juicy, full of flavor from simmering in the kraut.

& Jonni, that sounds delicious. Jim won';t eat sauerkraut, but I need to have a feast the next time he goes to some sports thingee..
Sauerkraut, brussel sprouts & cherries. All things he won't eat.. & lots of beans (he will eat but make him sick)
You know I have that West Side German engraved in my upbringing. I grew up with neighbors, the Kalkhoffs, who belonged to Germania, went to Kolping Grove, & had giant German parties several times a year.
Miss that stuff. Not so big here in Georgetown.
& Nini & Laila.. a good mett is hard to beat.

Well, Lisa, what are you doin' Saturday night? That's when I plan on making it! Jus REFUSES to eat sauerkraut, and I'm putting it in the crockpot (I think) for supper for me. I know Violet probably won't eat it, so there will be ample for sharing!!!!

These metts came from that great little butcher shop in Walton that I've been going to called Brooks. They have THE best meat, and they do their own slaughtering, buying, etc...Several years ago, near the top of my street, there was a proper German butcher. He's out of business and it's been a string of Mexican joints, but the young German butcher trainee, Stefan, now works for Brooks. He looks a little like Porky Pig, but he's an amazing butcher! He makes all of their sausages and wursts. YUM!

I live in PA Dutch country and am 100% Pa dutch. My great-greats came to the US from Germany. I can't believe I never heard of metts but I do like sausages.

Maybe you call them something else where you are? But, being Dutch/German do you know what Goetta is? Most folks don't outside of this "Rhine River" region. I'm wondering if it has to do with the region of Germany folks came from when they emigrated here.

Curious! I do think it must be relegated to the emigrants here in the Cincinnati area--when I went to school in Michigan, I looked for it all over in restaurants and noone had ever heard of it. Seemed so strange since that was all I'd grown up with! It's basically a "meat" that is made from pin oats, ground pork and beef and then shaped into a loaf that you slice and fry for breakfast. There are several different companies here that make it, but I prefer homemade when I can get it.

I fermented my first batch of sauerkraut last fall with the cabbages from my garden. Then I canned it. It is so good, not as sour as the store bought kind. I love to lay it in the bottom of a casserole dish and then bake a kielbasa or smoked sausage on it. So Good!

I would love to make my own, Diane, it just really wouldn't benefit me to do it since I'm the only one in....a 100 mile radius that I know who loves it! It sounds so yummy!

I can't even get my mother on board ("she doesn't like it "anymore") when I remember that being one of her "go to" meals when I was a kid!

For me, I do buy a local purveyor's homemade Kraut. They're called Kroeger Brothers (different than the Kroger Supermarkets) and they make artisan sausages, so it's a no brainer they'd make their own kraut :)

Saturday is my birthday Jonni! I would love to eat kraut & metts, but hoping maybe Jim will take me somewhere.
These links about German food & corned beef have me drooling. Jim doesn't care for either one, but since I am he cook, he may just have to suffer.

Oh my!!! Happy Birthday! I hope he takes you somewhere wonderful. We're gearing up in the next couple of weeks to go to Mayberry. It's a new chef owned joint downtown that features fresh regional cuisine, and it's getting rave reviews. Looking forward to "date night" :)

She would have simmered in a pan or oven because they didn't have crockpots. I don't know when they came out but it was during my mom's time not my grandma's. She would have loved it though!
