I am trying to decide what to plant this year. I know I want carrots and tomatoes also cabbages. I have a friend that is going to let me dig up a bunch of raspberry plants. What else do you think I should plant? Maybe some potatoes?

I've never had luck with carrots-they always end up small and deformed! I'd definitely try some herbs-it's so nice to not worry about having fresh basil or parsley or cilantro.

What about corn? Corn is pretty easy and grows fast. I always love bell peppers in my garden, too. :) Last year I lost most of my garden to the weeds due to being pregnant and not being able to be in the humid, hot KY weather-but this year I'm looking forward to growing everything we need so I don't need to buy vegetables! I also want to make my own baby food. Think about what your family eats, and what they don't, and go from there!

Starbucks and sushi to green fried tomatoes and corn pudding-I wouldn't change it for the world.

Megan- I grew carrots and they turned out pretty good last year. You need to have somewhat sandy or light soil.

I'm going to try growing blackberries, though I won't get any till next year. Also going to try soybeans--the kind for snacking. they're called "Beer Buddy" because in Japan, they're like peanuts are here. Someone gave me a seed potato so I guess I'll try that too. and the same as last year--cherry tomatoes, sugar snap peas, lettuce, cabbage, kohlrabi, peppers, summer squash...now I'm getting hungry:)

Blackberries would be fun to have too! I used to pick them from a spot in Idaho that grew wild when I lived there. It was amazing! I loved it!

We are growing carrots {shorter variety & multi color} in a raised garden bed. I have not had the best of luck when groing in the regular garden beds. I used some 12x2 boards to make the raised bed. Filled it with a mix of peat moss, garden soil, sand & compost. They like looser soil types anyway.

I am VERY excited to have my Banana melon seeds sprout. I bought them a few years ago & have yet to have any survive past the satge they are in. They look, smell & taste like a banana! I ordered mine from Baker Creek Heirlooms. They always have something new & exciting to try.
Lots of paste tomatoes, herbs {culinary & medicinal}, Flowers for bouquets {Zinnias, calendulas, asters, dwarf sunflowers etc that my 5 yr old loves to tend in her disgnated spot of the garden. Getting bees this Spring so gotta make sure we have food for them & eye candy for the tables}.

Lots of the normal stuff but a few new ones for us besides the banana melon, we are growing kidney beans & a bean name I can not at the moment recall... They are used in Fagioli soup. Oh and Kale! LOVE adding kale to soups.Ya gotta grow some beans for soups! Just let them grow & do not pick until they are almost dried out on the vine.

I would def go with potatoes! We are doing the fingerling blue ones this year. I bought a 2 lb bag of multi color fingerlings that we are using as the seed potatoes. They are sprouting as they sit on top of the fridge. If you have an organic market by you, it is way less expensive to buy your seed potatoes that way. Just let them sprout on the fridge top {nice heat & semi dark up there- never fails for us}. Cut into 2 pieces leaving aat least 2 "eye sprouts" on each piece and let cure before planting.

Okay Tammie! I have a question for you- I have some organic purple potatoes that got forgotten in a drawer and are sprouting in a SERIOUS way. I want to plant them when it gets time to outside (still winter here). Do I just toss the whole thing in the ground because it already sprouted or do I cut them? And if I cut them, do I need to do anything to the cut areas before planting? I am such a newbie when it comes to potatoes!

hi allie, well i am not tammie but thought i would say yes. a spud farmer here told me 3 eyes to a chunk. let air dry for a day or so. in a cool dry dark spot. then plant. we tried growing store spuds. found out they dip in chemical so they wont sprout out. the sprout comes but never becomes a plant. so we bought spuds from whole foods following year. few grew then. i think they were treated with sulpher to retard growth. i hope it grows for you. its a crap shoot may be dipped maybe not dipped. happy days sherrye

Alee~ I agree with Sherrye. Just cut the potato into cunks with each chunk portion having 2-3 eyes.
Best of luck in your taters! My wee ones are very excited to have "purple" potatoes. Fingerlings are the all time favorite potato here. I also have about 2 lbs of the yellow fingerling from a neighbor who grows organic. I had to keep them in a hanging basket down in the basement from last fall so i would not eat them-that way they would sprout on their own & I could plant them this year.

We are beginner gardeners, last year it didn't turn out too great for container gardening, but this year we are going to plant instead the following;

red/green bell peppers (didn't work last year, so these will be planted in the garden instead of a container)
strawberries (didn't work last year)
basil (this will be in a container still which was really the only thing that worked last year)
tomatoes (perhaps)
green beans/peas
blueberries (perhaps)
butternut squash
cucumber
cantaloupe
rosemary (perhaps)
mint (perhaps)

I am growing all the things I grew last year with a couple additions. All my seeds are either saved by me or from Seed-Savers. All are Heirlooms. Here goes:
6 kinds of tomatoes
3 kinds of peppers
cabbage
2 kinds of cutting lettuce
spinach
snap peas and regular peas
green beans
3 kinds of soup beans
butternut squash
2 kinds of zuchini squash
2 kinds of potatoes
carrots
herbs that I grow-mint,sage,oregano,parsley, rosemary and dill
new things I am planting are sweet corn and lima beans
Last year I planted 4 apple and 1 cherry tree. I also planted raspberries, blueberries and blackberries a couple years ago. I am expecting good crops of berries this year.
I have a patch of 75 year old heirloom rhubarb that produces all year for me...I love rhubarb!
I almost forgot the hops that I grew the last couple of years for my hubby's beer making!
I can't wait to get my hands in the dirt again!

I'm trying not to get jealous with all the wonderful sounding stuff everyone is planting...I'm taking the year off of planting this season to overhaul my raised beds. They really stunk last year, and that combined with a terrible growing season, anyway, made me really discouraged. But, with a little attention, next year should be better. I am going to plant English peas, herbs and tomatoes, but that's about all.

I joined a CSA about 10 minutes from my home, instead. I'll at least have more variety, and they have a "you pick", too. Starts in May and ends in October with pumpkins and squash :)

i'm going to really try to get my garden in shape but I want to grow lots of greens this year, and tomatoes, and peppers, and, and, you get the picture. I for sure want to add cold frames for fall and winter greens growing - after the bad weather in Mexico and New Mexico and resulting high prices in lettuce etc. I think it's imperative I have a local source of fresh green stuff. Plus I was just in Louisiana and had greens about 3 different fabulous ways at a church potluck so I'm sort of inspired:)

Grace- that is what it is like here too- except we have a dog that "goes" in the back yard so I have been spending some minutes every day out in the back yard with a shovel and a bucket. Once the nice weather really hits I don't want there to be an ick factor left over from winter!

I was just outside today surveying my garden, seeing what I need to do to get it ready. The raised beds need some attention and part of my fence needs mending but other than that I can't wait! Tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, corn, carrots, peas, eggplant, squash, watermelon.. I can't wait to begin.

This year I'm planting a lot of fruit. I love fruit way more than veggies and they are so expensive in the stores so I'm growing my own. I'm doing raspberries, blueberries, elderberries, ground cherries, cherry, apricot, and pear trees, kiwi, huckleberries, and cold hardy kiwi. If I could do bananas and citrus, I would but I'm in zone 5. I can't wait until May 1st when I get to plant!

I planted some spinach, red mustard and kale in my little cold frame awhile ago. It's where I have been putting my compost stuff for the chickens to stir up. That soil is great! The chickens were just waiting to jump in. Almost had to beat them off with a stick. Not really, but they were about to jump in. I had to hurry and get the windows back on. So I hope to have some greens soon. I have not had much luck lately with spinach.

This year I'm planting tomatoes, watermelon, strawberries, tons of bell peppers, radish, spring onions, mammoth dill, garlic chives, sweet basil, catnip, common chives, oregano, true lavender, sweet corn, carrots, potatoes, for sure.
Hoping to get a few squash, peas, and green beans too. Moved off the farm last year, so I have to pick and choose, and garden "space saver" style.
I was going to put some veggies out front, in my raised beds, but I'm afraid of neighboring kids just ripping produce off the plants, and up-rooting everything. So, herbs and lots and lots flowers go out front...

I want to grow lettuce and cabbage, but I've never tried. For reasons unknown to me, I'm afraid of them. Lol. Any pointers?

The tears I shed then, watered the flowers I harvest now.
