Hello everyone! I am a displaced farmgirl living in Germany. My husband is in the AirForce and we are on year three of four being over here. I grew up and will be heading back to rural Missouri when we are done. This is such an exciting website and chatroom and am so glad to be a part of it.

My interests and activities include quilting, canning (only applebutter since living here), candlemaking, hiking, green cleaning, and now learning to embroider. Oh and of course taking care of my almost two year old son. We found out he has celiacs disease and that has been a real challenge here not being able to read the labels and all, but it has made the whole family into more healthy eaters. And we are starting on the road to organic.

When we move back to Missouri I plan to raise chickens and bees and have a garden. Oh beautiful gardens, how I dream about thee....

A big Wisconsin hay dare to ya Crystal! We are so glad you joined us. My DH is in the Air Force and was in Germany for 6 years. He loved it! That was before we were married. Keep dreaming of your garden, chickens and bees and before you know it you will be there.

Hello Crystal...I too am an Air Force wife, but we are stationed in Colorado. Welcome to the group. It is a very cool way of building friendships with other woman who have the same ideas for living the farmgirl life. We have yet to be stationed in the Europe area yet, but I would love to be in Germany for some time before hubby retires. Hugs, Erica

Welcome, Crystal! :-)

My brother and his family were stationed in Germany for many years as well, then England and now settled and retired in Omaha. I'm glad you've found this forum to keep you connected. I've loved it so far. My husband was also diagnosed as a Celiac a few months ago, so I know how difficult the transition can be, but how wonderful that your entire family is taking it a challenge to eat healthier, safer foods. Best of luck to you all!

A BIG FarmGirl Welcome to you Crystal. I have a Nephew over there right now...well...he's stationed there, but he's actually over playing somewhere in the sand for a couple more months, then he'll be back in Germany. Glad to have you with us.

Very nice to meet you Crystal. The whole food thing is a huge challange, allergies galore here. I cant imagin not being able to read labels. Can you order online and have food shipped to you. We do A LOT of cooking and baking from scratch. Our son is AF he is in TX right now for Tech school then he is headed to Missouri for four years. Military sure seems to be a different life style he is having a really hard time with the food they serve nothing agrees with him. Your plans for Missouri sound awesome. I was looking out my kitchen window today and planning my backyard I cant wait. My daughter and I saw 8 Robins in one tree on Friday that means spring is just around the corner.

Insane and Blissfully Happy

Mari-lyn-does your son also have celiacs? We figured that Noah would never be able to join the military because he would never survive basic training. I do make all of his food from scratch, got a cookbook and order his flours online. Recently I found a german store that is like whole foods and has some of his flours. It saves us on shipping.

Here we have a flower called snow drp that is blooming and the whole backyard is covered in them!

Beverley, thank you but I think I will be ok for a while, I am moving really slow. I got a kit to make two pillow cases and bought a book to help me learn the stitches. What I do need to know is what kind of fabric to use when I go to make my 'own creation?' I want to make pretty hand towels for the bathroom. Is there already a certain kind of towel to use to make or do I need to buy fabric?

Welcome Crystal! My sister and her husband were stationed in Stuttgart years ago. They loved living in Germany and had their daughter there. She's 29 now, just to give you an idea how long ago that was!

Looking forward to hearing bout your life in Germany and hearing about your creations!

I just want to say 'thank you' to you all....I joined this thinking it might be fun but it has helped me in so many ways...many of you know I just shipped my hubby to Afghanistan plus since January had to put my 15 1/2 yr old chow chow down, got the Norovirus & just had a tooth pulled so I get pretty moody at times...anyway my point is that everyday I come here & I find so many things to smile or laugh about...it feels so good though I will never meet you all that I have a connection to the outside world with hens like me or at least some that can relate to me...again a big thank you to all of you! Heike, We are stationed at Spangdahlem AB, which is about 30 minutes north of Trier. Where were you from?

Michele I saw your topic for military wives and will be heading over there soon to leave a comment. I agree that it is nice to have hens like us that we can talk to even if we have never met.

Hello Crystal, I'm new too. I was raised in a military family (Army) and our farm is an hour from Fort Campbell on the TN side. I just wanted to tell you and your husband thanks for your service to our country! Thanks to all the others out there too!

Crystal :), my family is in Mannheim (by Heidelberg), and I lived in Frankfurt. I actually went to school at Rhein Main AB for a few years.

Heike,
I was born in Stuttgart, lived in Heilbronn as well as Augsburg,Neu Ulm & Munich... I am heading back to visit family & friends in just a few weeks.
I'll be in meimsheim from April 12 to 26th and plan to meet up with a couple of the MJF gals if we can work out something as it seems everyone is pretty well scattered. I think Talitha in Weisbaden is the closest and she is an 1 1/2 drive from Heilbronn.
I am taking my laptop with me so I can "stay connected" while in Deutschland.
Heidelberg is not that far from Heilbronn.
I am soooo excited, it has been 7 years since my last trip, way to long.

Lucky you! I will be looking for your posts :).
We are hoping for a $$ wind, so that we may go back this June for the Women's Soccer World Cup. My daughter started playing last year, was teh only girl on a boys under 14 team :)...quite an adventure. Now she is an avid soccer player. The German women are tremendous!

I miss my food. That is all I can think about. I hope to go back in the summer, as summers are the best in the city.

Have a wonderful trip!
