We are at the beginning stages of food storage. With continued price increases, gas prices going up, & other factors we feel that food cost are going to get even more expensive so we are stocking up. Here is my TOP 10 Food Items to have in storage.

1. Beans
2. Rice
3. Pasta
4. Canned Tomatoes
5. Oatmeal
6. Powdered Milk
7. Chicken Boullion
8. Beef Boullion
9. Corn Meal
10. Flour

Salt, Pepper, Sugar and other spices are really important too. What are your TOP 10?

Your top ten matches mine. Also, oil, vinegar, yeast, cocoa, canned green beans and corn. Syrups (cane, maple, honey). Coffee, tea. Canned fruit. Peanut butter.

I am going to put away whole corn instead of cornmeal because, around here anyway, it will store alot better. THen I can rehydrate it, plant it, pop it, or grind it! I also put in whole wheat and whole oats as well as old fashioned oat meal.

I am glad to see that others are stocking up to take care of their families. I cannot believe how much prices are sky-rocketing. ANd if gas goes up to the $5 people are talking about.... I can't even imagine what that's going to do to the price of food and daily household items.

Do what you love, love what you do.

Don't forget that tiny little bug eggs are in the flour, cornmeal, oatmeal, rice and pasta. I Freeze all the above. At least for as long as I have room in the freezer. Freezing the grains will kill the eggs. I also use my vacuum sealer after taking the packages out of the freezer. Along with the basics, be sure to have some good sweet treats (cake mix, pudding mix canned fuit). If we have to rely on our stored food, the kids (big kids too) are going to be cranky and sometimes a treat is better for the soul than beans and rice.

I am so glad others are thinking along the same lines as I am. Some in my family think I am being silly but I am really stressed about all of this. I am the one who worries about my family being fed and clothed so all the worry falls on me. Ugh!! I just hope I have time to stock up before everything goes out of sight!

Bellepepper - I agree regarding flour. I free all purpose flour for a few days before storing in pantry. Whole grain flours I store in the freezer. Does anyone grind their own grain? I haven't invested in a grain mill but I'm thinking about it. If you use one, what name brand do you use? Hand grinder or electric?

I'm adding butter and cheese to my list and am canning those. I have been using both canned items along and love them. I got cheese on sale last night for 99 cents per 8 oz and will be canning tomorrow. I also found hamburger for $1.78 (miracle) and am making and canning chili tomorrow. Gonna be a busy day. :-)
