I didn't realize how much TV Nora was watching until I put my foot down and turned the TV off. Hearing and seeing her play with her toys again is a joy and a good lesson. Given the opportunity she is just as happy playing with her toys and it is so much better for her. From now on the TV is going to have more "off" time. I wish we could get rid of it but my hubby would never let that happen. Oh well. I'll figure out something!

We did the same thing at our house~amazing how many hours were being gobbled up with the tv! It doesn't come on until 8 pm now and is usually off by 9. The kids fussed a little at first, but seem to have accepted the new rule...they're probably just happy that we didn't get rid of it altogether!

Alee, I should do the same. I watch a lot of tv, but most of it is during the weekend. But that's definitely no excuse, it should be off more than not!

| We went through this when the kids were small. It was all 'good tv', public television, but wow, it was turning into hours everyday. The energy was so much better when it was off completely or only for special events. |

We limit Violet's tv time, too, Alee. Especially since she wouldn't even acknowledge a person when they were leaving, or whatever. At times, she was almost in a tv "trance". We only let her watch Sprout and PBS, but still. She can zone out for 58 minutes on Sesame Street and then it's off.
I find, on the weekends, that I've been turning off the tv after she eats breakfast and watches the early morning PBS stuff and then she uses her imagination, plays with toys while I do housework and then we do something together, like play with play-doh or read books. I've noticed a difference in her communication and even her tempermant since limited tv time.

I think children nowadays watch too much tv (says someone with no children). I am glad I didnīt grow up with day time tv, we got a tv when I was 7 or 8, and there were only 2 (TWO) channels then, starting at 7 or 8 in the eve, till about 11 I think. Childrens programmes were only on wednesday afternoon and saturday afternoon and early eve (7 o clock till 7.30)....OH the good old days lol

My inlaws gave my dd an ipod touch for her birthday last year (against my wishes). I have to really watch her... she turns into what I call "zombie child". I check all her email and what games she plays. It is such a time zapper and I don't like it.

| Alee -- your post reminds me of something I heard the other day. Can't remember who said it, but it was something like: You know your kid watches too much TV when you ask them what time school starts and they say, "7 am, 6 am Central." |

Mara- LOL! Oh yes! I can definitly agree! I remember as a kid learning the different time zones because we live in Mountain time zone and it seems like they always mentioned either pacific or central!

Good for you all! TV is such a waste of time and really, there's not much on that's worth watching. Since we moved to Cheyenne and we decided not to pay for cable or dish I've gotten used to watching the 3-5 channels that are still available over the air. I find I only want to watch two programs a week and sometimes the Masterpiece Theatre offering. It's just like when I was a kid and you have the 3 networks and maybe a PBS and that was it. There was plenty on yet not so much that we didn't watch it all the time like they do now. Not only will your children benefit from not watching so much TV, you will too. Keep it up!

Don't know if I am sorry to say or proud to say that I am a news, weather and food tv junkie. I don't watch tv during the day, oh, that might be because I am in here on the computer. I almost never missed my soap (Guiding Light) for almost 50 years and then they took it off the air. I cried like I had lost a relative or 10. But if you watch the news, it is almost as good as a soap. Such drama, mostly phony. I like to know what is going on. On the other hand, I don't turn on my cell phone because I like my solitude. There is such poor programing, that the news is more interesting than some shut-em-up, cops and robbers tv show. Oh, I just discribed the news. Or the government to be exact.
Well, gotta go, almost time for my cookin show.
