Has anyone else heard about this? Due to flooding, the cost of cotton has reached an all-time high. they are predicting at least a ten percent increase in the cost of clothes. I'm thinking that maybe more people will buy from resale shops rather than spend more on clothes. Any other thoughts on this issue?

Thank heavens I'm a yard sale and thrift store diva! I hadn't yet heard that bit of news, but it really doesn't surprise me. We are have horrendous weather problems due to climate change.

Thank heavens I have a stockpile of cotton fabrics (years of collecting for clothing and quilts) I'll just have to get into my stash and make something. If you don't have my resources how about finding a friend your size and trading clothes for a "new look". Thrift stores are really great but we can share or trade with each other.

| We grow cotton in our farming operation. The area farmers are going crazy with the idea of growing cotton this year due to the high commodity price and several of them wanting us to harvest their cotton this fall. Prices started climbing last summer and haven't stop climbing, yet. It will be interesting to see what happens to the price this summer after the cotton is planted. If a lot of acreage is planted, the result could be a crash in prices. I think the scare in clothing prices is like food prices. The industry is trying to cover any perceived increase in their cost even if it doesn't become a reality. |

The cotton price thing is really hurting the company I work for. We sell all kinds of gloves & protective clothing. Much of it is made overseas, with the cotton sourced in China & Pakistan. As an example, something that cost us $2.00 is now costing us $4.50,(which was more than we were selling it for last month!) and the manufacturers tell us there's another price increase coming at the end of the month!
I have heard that it's not ALL about the bad cotton crops they had there. A lot of it is due to the workers not wanting to work for a dime a day, making an item that sells for a dollar.....Rightfully so, they want a living wage,so the low cost cotton products manufacturing jobs are being by passed in favor of getting a job making i-pods, i-phones, etc.....
It'll be interesting to see how this all shakes out.

i am so lucky I just bought 15 yards of cotton muslin for a total of $29.99 just before the price doubled.....I too, hit the yoard sales, thrift shops ect since I love old white cotton sheets to sew with...I am telling you finding old sheets from the 1940's was really nice as they are so heavy in wieght...not like the thin ones we find now adays...plus they dye really nice...i make a lot of sleeveless type lacy slip that can be worn as a summer dress, or wear with a skirt so the top part is now a shirt....& I have found that the heavier sheets & muslin have a wonderful softness to them after a few washes & line dried......sorry didn't mean to go off....Now with the earthquakes I am sure that will effect the price of things as well along with the gas prices to ship things across country.....In time as it always does things will settle down but I have a feeling as with everything it will not be as cheap as it was before all this happened....Michele'

I have heard about the price of cotton shooting up. i thin it was on Good Morning America where they suggested thatby August it would top. Unfortunatley I agree with Michele - i think that with the eartquakes we are going to see a rise in price of a geat many things!

Jeans are supposed to go up in price. I have about two pairs at a time, all the time. I about need a new pair as mine are getting worn. Not sure what to expect, they are so dang expensive already.

Durring class today, we were discussing organic sustainable fabrics. The teacher brough up an interesting theory. There is now a prediction that in the near future, cotton will be considered a luxury fabric like cashmere while bamboo and hemp make up the majority of our wardrobes.

Although the prices are rising, like anything else we all adjust.
The hard part is the jump in price. I sew for a living and the wholesale place I purchase my cotton and polyester batting's and pillow forms from have given us an 11% increase across the board.
Due to higher demands for the products in more countries and no increase in the supply chains, we will see higher prices. . . just like we do for gasoline.
The good news? We are all Farmgirl's and know how to cope!!  We can re-purpose items, shop from the thrift stores and know a bargain when we see one!! So, although we cannot change what is happening by the big companies, it is okay. . . we know how to work together and support one another.
