Seeing the positive response to the new writing and art merit badges( which I love btw) I would like to introduce another new merit badge idea I thought up a while back but wasn't brave enough to post it here then... so here goes!

We are a homeschooling family, (10 years and counting) and I’ve noticed a lot of other homeschooling farmgirls on the connection too! Wouldn’t it be neat if there were a badge for homeschooling farmgirls and their youngins’?

It might just fit nice and cozy in the Each Other Category!

We could call it HOME GROWN KIDS

This is a merit badge for Sisters

Beginner:

1).Find out your States legal requirements for homeschoolers.

2).Go on line to find a local support group of new/seasoned homeschoolers to learn about upcoming activities, classes and gatherings for homeschoolers in your area and take part in one indoor/ outdoor activity.

Intermediate:

1).Read “The Well Adjusted Child” (the social benefits of homeschooling) By Rachel Gathercole. Talk to your family and friends about your decision to homeschool.

2).Use your local Library as a place to connect with other homeschoolers. Sign your child/children up for a weekly story time or craft activity.

Expert:

Begin to research homeschooling materials and teaching philosophies. Homeschooling Farmgirl moms know children, nature and art go together. These ground breaking educator’s (Charlotte Mason, Waldorf, and Montessori,) are all about connecting children with nature and art from the beginning. Read one book of your choice by any of these educators.

2). In true farmgirl fashion, plan a field trip to a local organic farm for your local homeschooling group or teach a class that combines nature and art with your own children or a homeschool group.

3). Do this fun and easy activity for farmerettes' and farm boys: Plant organic seeds and watch them germinate and grow with your child. Study Photosynthesis and have your child/children draw a plant from the roots up and tell us how it worked out!

I can't wait to hear what you think of this merit badge idea.

I truly enjoyed putting it together!

I look forward to hearing what people think!

Maybe we could create a badge from my drawing of a Little Red School House?

Wow, that is such a great idea!!! I won't be able to do it until I have kids of my own, but I am graduating this year from my mom and dad's "home-grown school" and have never been sorry that I am home schooled! I have had so much more time to read, and garden, and ride\train my horse, and play piano, and so much more, than I would have if I had gone to public school. Thanks for posting this!

Debbie - We homeschool our 4 kids (13, 12, 7, and 6) and I think it is a great idea.

Bre, you sound just like our daughter.. She keeps busy with piano, art and writing, some gardening and we rode horses together for a while too!

What an awesome idea! I'm getting ready to graduate my first homeschooler from our homeschool this June. I have 3 kiddos, 18yo, 12yo and 11yo...all boys. You merit badge really covers all the bases. :-)

Hi Debbie,

I'm sorry I didn't see this post earlier. That is a great idea for a badge. I'm not sure if it would work with the Sisterhood badges though since we try not to create any badges that will exclude anyone, (in this case those without children, those whose children are grown, or those who have their kids in public school). However we may be able to work it into the Young Cultivator's badges... I'll pass it along to MJ and the crew and see what we can come up with, also we're open to any suggestions you may have as well. Thanks, Happy Friday.

Hi Kevin,
I thought of that too... Let's put our heads together and see if we can tweak it so that isn't the case... I'll think on it some too.
Thanks so much for your reply!
