Hello sisters!! I am currently working on earning my Beginner Level Green Energy badge. I have done research on all of the different types of enery that is available to us: Natural Gas, Hydroeletcric, coal, nuclear, and sustainable. What I found most interesting was discovering the pros and cons of each type of energy that can be generated. And of course, how costly it can all be! (And I know we are all WAY too aware of that these days!)
What caught my attention the most was the worst source of energy (in my opinion), Nuclear Energy; and the best source, which is of course sustainable energy. The most frustrating thought that keeps popping into my head is all of the red tape that an individual or family would have to go through in order to get all of the proper permits and permission to create their own forms of sustainable energy.
On the flip side of that, I have a very difficult time accepting nucelar energy. I do know that, put in the right hands, and managed by peope the purest intentions, nuclear energy can be of great use in the areas of technology, economic growth, and national security. However, I am also a stepmother to two children who's birth mom works at one of the largest nucelar plants in the U.S. Her first son was born with a genetic mutation that has caused him to live his life with Muscular Dystrophy (MD is a degenerative muscle-wasting disease for which there is no cure; life expectancy is late teens to early and sometimes mid-20's. He is now 15 and completely wheelchair bound. From the ages of 6 - 10 he also suffered with a seizure disorder. He's needed to have glasses. He has a speech impedicment. And in spite of being only months away from turning 16 y/o, he has never hit puberty and his hands, feet, and genitalia are extremely small for his 150lb fram.
His younger brother was born with a kidney that was 75% eaten up with a tumor. He had to have his kidney removed when he was 3 days old. He is now 14 y/o. He requires glassess to read, and he too, had a seizure disorder that lasted from ages 7 - 10. His were partial seizures, which means that he would flail about and was unable to speak until it was over.
My husband and I have 3 completely healthy children w/o a singel problem, and sometimes I just can't help but wonder if any of my stepson's disorders were due to nuclear radiation exposure - ???
Anyway, that's my leson on learning the different types of energy that are available to us in the world. And boy, what I wouldn't give to go completely off the grid and just power my own home mysel
!!!!

Christine,
I know this isn't really related to your merit badge post, but after I saw your name I had to ask: Are you an actual "baby nurse"? I'm a neonatal nurse myself, so I was wondering. Also, love the John Denver lyric :)

Great post, Christine! While I can't say with certainty, I would tend to think that your step-childrens issues might have something to do with their mother being exposed to such toxic stuff. Do some research about nuclear weapons testing and bombing in foreign contries (middle-eastern) and you will see that many of the children have birth deformities and other ailments. There are also communities here in the US with chemical plants, energy plants and linoleum manufacturing plants that have a super high rate of cancer and other issues that affect the people living closest to them. Of course these companies say that there is no risk what-so-ever but I tend to disagree. There is a book called, "Not Just A Pretty Face," that I highly recommend. It's about all the toxins we are exposed to everyday, the research that has been done and the research that has had difficulty coming to light. It really is a fantastic book. Anyway, thanks for posting and I'm so sorry that your step-children have to deal with these issues. It must be very difficult for them and you. Take care.
