I am very excited to have my medicinal seed garden this year. I still have medicinal herbs I would love to add. Which brings me to ask "How about an herbal seed swap?" The starting of seeds starts next week for me and I have more then enough to start and swap out. I realize there are many medicinal/culinary style herbs which do not do well from seed and are better as rooted starts. Hopefully many of you are up for some trading. Not only to expand your own herbal garden, but to help our fellow Farmgirl sisters in getting theirs established/expanded.
~To get things started, here is the list of what I have in medicinal herb seeds and what I will have once the ground defrosts for harvesting of root starts:
30 tiny seeds Chinese Scullcap {not the same as American & not interchangable} this herb is used in connection with the following conditions: Bronchitis, hay fever, hepatitis and hypertension. Historical or traditional use. Chinese scullcap is typically used in herbal combinations to treat inflammatory skin conditions, allergies, high cholesterol and triglycerides, and high blood pressure.
30 tiny seeds Anthos Valerian{Valeriana officialis} Leaves & flowers used. Sedative, Stimulant, Nervine. Sleep aid, reduces insomnia, pain, chest complaints, muscle spasms.
30 tiny seeds Elecampane Parts Used:Root and rhizome, flowers Common Uses:Asthma * Bronchitis * Congestion/Chest & Sinus * Cough * Neuralgia * Parasites/Worms *
30 tiny seeds Horehound {the "cough drop" herb} Parts Used:Aerial parts Common Uses:Bronchitis * Colds * Cough * Digestion/Indigestion * Heart Tonics/Cordials * Sore Throat/Laryngitis *
30 tiny seeds Erfurter MarshmallowThis German-bred variety of marshmallow has been selected for a high content of mucco-polysaccharides Used for sore mouths, coughs and to treat wounds. Also to aid women during childbirth Parts used:all *When Marshmallow is prepared as a salve, it is a very effective remedy for burns, minor wounds, bruises, Brings relief for the pain of sprains and any muscle aches. The herb reduces pain, inflammation and swelling of bee stings and insect bites.
30 tiny seeds Chinese Motherwort {L. artemisia} said to be the true motherwort herb. used to treat menstrual irregularities, activating blood circulation and reducing blood pressure. A MAJOR staple in our uses for the preteen hormone emotional roller coaster.
25 tiny seeds Evening Primrose (Oenothera lamarckiana) Oil in seeds contains gamma linolenic acid (GLA), a precursor of prostaglandin E1. The latter is very active biologically regulating such functions as the vessel and immune systems. By supplementing the diet with GLA, one can bypass a blockage of prostaglandin E1 production caused by aging, poor diet, or alcoholism. Chronic complaints such as PMS disappear. Roots can be eaten as a vegetable; shoots as a salad.
In the garden, once defrosted, I have purple flower Comfrey. Enough roots for 5 or more nice portion trades.
I am looking to trade for : American Scullcap Stevia Mugwort Rooted Rosemary Rooted Lavender Rooted Patchouli
I am open to suggested medicinal herb seed/plants for trades but the above is top of my list...without refering to notebook . Looking forward to some trading! |

batznthebelfry~ That would be fantastic! I am still somewhat new at making my own. I have been making first aid salves and such for years {actually found a combo that made my daughters eczema disapear & has not come back- It showed up one Spring when she was almost 3 and stayed for over a year}. Wish I had taken better notes on that one. I know what was in it but can not remember proportions. I have not needed to make more since it took care of it in 2 1/2 months. reducing it slowly then being gone. I have always used store bought herbs for teas & meddled in already made herbals, so this is my first venture in growing my own outside of what I have used from the basic medicinal garden.
I am curently trying to find a combo to help a friends friend with anxeity issues. A man from Denmark whom they can not afford isurance for and this issue is preventing him from finding work. One of those cases where he he was fine then slowly this crept in and has been a struggle for their family. I know through the experience of my husband (not an anxeity issue but prior internal herbal experiments I have done on him, lol) that herbals on men seem to take differently. Their systems and size have different proportional needs. Almost like what works for one person doesnt for another. Men in my herbal adventures have been less succesful in my trials.
I am planning an entire Summer lesson fun for teaching my 2 young girls and son about herbals all around us. Getting the wildcraft game for Spring and then dedicating 2 weeks per herb that can be found in our enviroment & from Mum's herb garden. Very excited to share more of the herbal ways with them and to have such a great game to involve children into the world of knowledge and benefits in Medicinal herbs. The Mother wort was the begining of my 11yr old's openness. I began using it for her preteen hormones craziness {crying for no reason, anger over petty little things, etc. Things she "felt" she could not control.} Now, she is introducing her friends to it and I am doing "the talk" with a few of their mum's hoping they will allow their daughters to try it. Oh my, this was alot shorter in my head then what I see on the screen.lol. I look forward to some trading not only of the herbs but knowledge/recipes. This looks to be so refreshing and fun! |

wow that sounds like a lot of fun to do with your kids....plus them being outside in the fresh air will do wonders also. i hve been an herbalist...book taught since 1995...i have cabinets full of dried herbs, a bookcase of herb books & knowledge so if you have any questions I will do the research for you on it & send it. :) yes you are right about herbs working different on males...they have such a different hormone system than females but Valerian, a mild anti-depression herb is said to work well for men....Anxiety causes depression espcially on the system....funny I just made up a tea for a change of life woman going thur anxiety, depression & listlessness....its a mixture of lemongrass, mints, cloves & hybisus flowers....mints & cloves are said to be a mood elevator, hybisus & lemongrass help relax the body & mind.....since some of this I can not grow here I get thur the San Franisco herb company....forgive the misspells I type way too fast...lol plus I have keys that want to stick.... i forgot I gave a lot of my herb seeds to a neighbor who wanted to grow them inside over the winter but I am always ordering seeds from a great company in Canada....once I find the catalog I will give you their address...I think you will enjoy what they have. I will tell you right now once you really get into herbs, growing them, using them 7 making things with them you will become addicted! have a great day M' #2622

Hi girls this sounds wonderful : ) I would love to be involved with an exchange..
I have an abundance of purple coneflower seeds aka/ Echinacea Purpurea. They have been grown & harvested organically and I would be willing to trade for other types of herbs. My plants are heat and cold resistant with very hardy stems that produce nice flower heads/ pretty purple color too : )
These would be ready to send for this springs planting : ))

Zen Goddess~ I would love to trade for some of those. Is anything you would be interested in from my list? I was just going through my list of herbs for a book about all herbs that can be grown on our land or is easily found in the local woods/metro parks- a book for my children to have, eliminating store bought herbs in light of wisdom I was once told "It is best to know 40 uses of one herb, then one use for 40 herbs". Enchincea is on my list and I discovered I have no seed. lol. |

batzinthebelfry, I think you may be thinking of Richter's herbs based in Ontario. they have seeds you can't find anywhere else (or I can't anyway). they have a great website. I have the following seeds: Motherwort, calendula, skullcap, echinacea, sweet cicely, burdock and comfrey root cuttings I can share. I've tried growing stevia here, but it's so cold it never sets seed or lasts more than a season.
