WE want to be able to sell 10,000dollars worth of farm products...angora fleece? eggs? umm sides of beef? Can anyone give me their formula for qualifying for the land tax exemption in your area? We need to sell 10,000$ ...not make a profit just yet.. What do you do? Please give me your advice!!!. Right now we have 2 horses, 2 goats 40 chickens 2 ducks and a nice big barn coming along....some of our layers are old...so we need to get our new ones ready for the new laying season...ANYONE? |

hmm. One thing you might think about is maybe using the hair from the horses on bracelets? I know those are really popular right now.

a few ideas: have you considered starting a csa. if your area has a farmer's market get involved with that. if it doesn't then talk to your mayor about getting one started. make sure that your farm is listed on localharvest.org also run ads in your local paper and in the next town over advertising farm fresh produce and eggs, etc. try advertising through your local craigslist also.offer farm events that will pull folks in like perhaps a class on gardening or backyard chickens, then have the farm fresh items available for sale. hostess a farm day where folks can see the workings of your farm like a "meet your local farmer" and have the items available for purchase. just a few ideas tossed out there for you...of course feel free to chunk them in file 13 if they won't work for you...:0) wishing you the best.

My best advise is to make a list of "all things farm" so if you have a garden, list all the veggies, flowers and herbs that you would be able to sell, chickens mean eggs. . also, some farms harvest their chickens and make them available for sale as well, you mentioned goats, male? Female? there is always goats milk, goat cheese, etc. What about hay? Do you have a field large enough for hay production? How about bees? Apple trees? Blueberry bushes? Raspberries? You get the idea.
Once you make a list of all things you can think of, then you start selecting what will work for you and your farm. . . this way you will be developing your business plan, keeping a focus and start making some money. Hope this helps some!

My best advice is make a business plan out. You can co to SCORE and they have a sample plan to use. I have been working on mine for a year and along with going to SCORE seminars. It is so helpful and can help you from going to to debt that will shut you down. Ideas become dreams and dreams become reality as long as you plan for them. Good Luck

Amen to the business plan!
My advice would be to think of the value add products such as selling jam instead of berries. People will pay more and you may have a year-round product. Of course, you just got a whole lot busier if you have to make the product too.
And maybe even more important ... you have to enjoy it and it has to be a passion.

I put in a bunch of daylilies several years ago to make extra money. When I had time to work at it they did really well and sell easily. You don't need much space to do it either. :) |
