I need a new sewing machine Any suggestion?
What are your likes and dislikes in a machine?

| I prefer the Elna's, both my mother and grandmother have one as well. My mom's is from the 60's and has not required any major maintenance. I had previously purchased another sewing machine and it was a huge mistake as I didn't try it out first. My advice is to TRY the machine first to know if it is a good fit for you. Once I tried my Elna machine I loved it and knew it was the one for me. Each brand or even model fits to different people so you just need to try the machine see if it works for you and then also see if it has the features you want as well. |

I agree with Valerie, you need to try out different models in your price range. I actually have a Bernina, Pfaff, a janome, and an old viking. I love my old viking but it doesn't do a lot of the things my computerized machines do. My Pfaff is a real favorite as I like the dual feed on the presser foot. My Janomes is a great little machine to take to class although I have done alot of machine applique on it. So you really need to write down what you want the machine to do and what price range you want to be in and start test driving. I test drove my Bernina probably 10 tens before I actually bought one. I took fabric in to piece, and did some applique on it before I said yes. Check to make sure they will give you classes on the machine and you don't live to far away to take advantage of them. I lived to far away to take classes on my Pfaff so I think I have missed out on a lot of things this machine can do. Its all a personal preference. I own a old metal viking but don't care for the new computerized ones. And your thinking why does she own so many machines. I think of it as an addiction like hunters have. You can only shoot one gun but most hunters own lots of them. I like different features on each machine and I don't trade my machines in as I don't feel you get what you have invested in them so I just keep them. Plus when the grandkids come I have a machine for them to use. Sorry for the long reply.

I have had Vikings, which I love. My mom and sister like Janome which is what my daughter (age 11) inherited from her other grandma. My aunt uses only Bernina. So it is all a matter of preference. Take some time and sit and try them out. Go to a good sewing machine shop that will take the time to show them to you. Good Luck and have fun!! How exciting to get a new machine!

I love my janome. I actually have 3.2 sewing 1 embroidery. SD has 2 Janome as well
My very favorite machines are my vintage featherweights.

Debra, I would recommend a Viking. I have had the Rose and now have a Sapphire and it is awesome for quilting. It has an automatic presser foot that lowers as soon as you hit the foot feed. Lots of great features for quilting. I really like it. I used my Rose for quilting as well and really enjoyed it too.
