Have any of you read Radical Homemakers by Shannon Hayes? I found it truly inspiring, and I found my own views repeated in it over and over. Anyone else find that to be true? Wanna discuss the book?

That is one book that I have not read. I will see if our library has it. I just finished going through 6 crochet pattern books, and have 2 more stacks of books to read :)

Just checked. Three libraries have it, and I am 21 on the waiting list. It must be good.

I sent myself a free sample of it on my Kindle and was very intrigued. I think I may have to download it now!

How do you send yourself a free sample on Kindle? I just looked on Amazon for it and didn't see where it's offered. What's your secret?

Sorry - I spoke too soon - was looking in the wrong place. I just sent myself the free sample too. I'm going to check out some of my other wish-list titles and maybe narrow my list! Thanks for the idea!

Holly, I love getting the free samples! It's really saved me from buying a lot of things that I thought were going to be more interesting than they actually were. :)

I absolutely loved this book (the first half more than the second, though). It was so inspirational and encouraging... and I'm using a quote from it in the Introduction to the Cookbook we're doing with our MOPS group (the one about how unfortunate that so many people spend $ on activities for their kids when what they really need is a homecooked meal with their family...)

Lanette, the first half was fascinating, especially seeing the way corporations changed the face of the family in the U.S. I did really enjoy reading about the ways other families deal with the challenges of these lifestyle choices--and seeing other families that were more like my own than I'm used to seeing!

Your cookbook sounds awesome! Our kids are often at their biological mother's for dinner, since we have joint custody, but when they're here at dinner time we all sit a the table together and talk to each other. I think it's a big part of why our kids still want to talk to us, even though they are 12 and 15.

Say no more, Farmgirls! I'm in. If we're going to do a book discussion, let's do a chapter or two a week and post on a specific day. Give us some time to get the book and start reading. Dianne in the Hudson Valley

Dianne, I think that sounds like a great plan. How long do you all need to decide if you want to participate, get a copy, start reading? Maybe in a month? I like the idea of having a day of the week to post on, or at least to start in on the next chapter, like we start discussin the next chapter every Monday or something.

What do y'all think?

I've had this book on request in our library system for 2 months now! They did an article about a woman regarding this book in a local paper. I think that's why the long wait.

I may have to break down and buy it!

Our library system doesn't even have the book, but Amazon has it in paperback for $13, so I'll probably just order it. The book sounds like something I might re-read or pass on to a fellow farm girl. Dianne in the Hudson Valley

My library didn't have it either, so I ordered it from our local bookshop. And I'm re-reading it because it covers a lot of ground and I read it so fast the first time--plus I've passed it to my writing/farmgirl buddy to read as well. So I'm glad I bought it!

The library has it now and the waiting list is looooooong. I volunteer at the library and I see at least one copy go through circulation to someone almost every week.

It finally came in from the library. I hope to start it today. I only have 2 weeks. If I like it, I'll buy it.

I am going to have to buy it too. I have checked our local library, my colleges library that can pull from 8 other colleges, and my hometown library, and no dice. :( I think I will order off Amazon as well.

Wow, okay, so it looks like we have several interested parties--I'm excited! I really like someone's suggestion of discussing a chapter a week on the forums, what does everyone think?

Should we just keep it all in one thread, or should there be a thread per chapter? It seems like it would be less forum cluttering to just have one thread.

Should we use this here thread, or should I start a whole new one, something along the lines of "Radical Homemakers Book Group", so other farmgirls know what's what?

AND, when do we want to start? I don't mind giving everyone time to find the book, and don't have any particular time frame in mind so is there a consensus of some kind?

I would love to read this "with" all of you. I ordered it from Amazon - we could not find it at our library.

I want to join in on the book club. I can order the book tonight and I should have it next week. If there is anything I can do to help get this party started let me know.
