Hello Farmgirl's !! How are you all doing with the challenge so far?? For me, I am tackling the cabinet that holds my coffee, tea, basics for baking like the baking powder, baking soda etc. Time to wash the shelves, rotate the inventory and "see" what is hiding on the top shelf that I have forgotten all about!
Tip of the Day:
If your like me, we have large cabinets and shelves that are high up or very deep. . . so seeing what's there is hard at best. So in order to help keep things organized, I am making a map of my cabinet. It will help me remember "where" I put something that is used seasonally. . and I discovered it will also help when someone else is in the kitchen, they can look at the map to see where any particular item is located!
Now let's hear how all of you are doing so far!!

Today is fog, rain, and lots if ice. In my mid-winter cleaning I found 6 packages for Mrs. Wages spaghetti sauce mix for canning. So I've pulled out a bunch of my canned tomato sauce and turning it into canned spaghetti sauce, after that I'm cleaning the all berries out of the freezer and making jam with them. It not only cleans out the freezer, the canning heats the house with a purpose and makes it smell yummy

Joining in on this! Just did two shelves of my pantry all the cans are in their own rows nice and neat, just the other 5 shelves are still a mess. I never realized how many cans of soup my DH had bought!

I love the map idea/ I could tape it to the inside of the cabinet doors and never have to hear "where did you move it to this time ?" again |

Smiley, your right! If you place it in one of those sheet protectors used in a notebook, it will keep it neat for quite some time.
AlterationsbyEmily, So happy to have you join us!! Good for you on accomplishing so much already!! Isn't it fun to find out what you have? Keep up the great work and remember you only need to devote 10 minutes each day!
Tip of the Week:
Make a two master lists of all the items you purchase from the grocery store. One will be your general list and the other is for special occasions.
You will want 3 columns after the name of your item. The first column is for how many you want to have "in stock" at all times. The second column is for how many you will need to purchase when you go shopping and the third column is where you put the actual everyday price of your item ( Not the sale price!). So if you intend to have 3-five pound bags of sugar on hand and you have 2 now your would put 1 in the purchase column. If the average price you pay is $3.69 put that in the amount column.
Now, with your list in hand, you will see what you need, gather any coupons to go with the items on your purchase list and know if a sale is a good one ( some deals are not always as good as they seem. . . If our brand of tuna is on sale 10 for $10.00 it sounds good until I look at my master sheet and realize I normally pay 89 cents per can)
Check in and let us know how your making out. . . no worries if you have not got it all done. . . like me, I'm only on cabinet 2!!

I've been using the preprinted lists at http://organizedhome.com/household-notebook/printable-pages to help me keep my pantry stocked and organized. I like that there are lists for pantry items, menu planning, etc. I've made my own household notebook from the lists that meet my needs. |

Wow. what a list of lists. Wanted to print them all until I remembered I'm about of printer ink. Made me tired just reading the catagories. What I didn't see was a list for things like, What book I want to read next, what is on TV tonight, Time alloted to computer, quilting, crochetting. You know, the sit down stuff. LOL

I agree Jennifer the link is such a good tool.
Joanna -I really liked the idea of having a price list of what I would pay everyday for an item, that way I can keep tabs if it is a good price when I see it somewhere else. I'm just about done cleaning all the cupboards. Next will be working on the pantry list/price sheet.

Wow! I'm glad to see this topic! I have to keep my house spotless right now because we have our house for sale and are having lots of showings lately... I have already been cleaning, organizing, and purging unneeded items. This is very hard to do with a rambunctious 2 year old boy and a newborn! I'm exhausted! Still, this is motivating... I still have closets to clean out. Some ideas for your cupboards...wall paper the inside with pretty paper before reorganizing. And for your old metal cookie sheets...paint r wall paper them and turn some old broaches into magnets...voila, instant message board :)

I emptied my china cabinet. It was full of china we haven't used in over 10 years and wedding memorabilia (just celebrated 27 years with DH!). Threw it all in the dump - just kidding!! I've boxed it up for the attic since I just can't get rid of it yet. I took all of my big serving dishes and holiday dishes and put them in the china cabinet. The big cabinet that held my serving dishes & holiday dishes now holds my canned goods and staples. No more bending over digging through dark lower cabinets!! Everything is organized just like grocery store shelves. And my plastic containers? They went to Goodwill. I don't like them (don't get me started on the dangers of storing food in plastics) and I almost never used them so out the door they went. I use canning jars for left overs now. Doesn't it feel great to have organized cabinets? And yep - I'm working on that merit badge!

Jennifer, thanks for sharing the lists. Wow? I too have to get some ink cartridges before I print out all of them. Got a burr in my bonnet the other day and went through one of my cupboards that I keep all my spices, etc. in. Looked at the "use by" dates and was really surprised - a lot of them were way old. So I started going through everything and tossed the old stuff and re-organized my shelves. Felt good after getting it done. Don't know why, but after the new year I just got this thing about cleaning out my closets, etc. Been doing a little bit each day or so. What I don't use or wear any more goes to the thrift store in town. I just feel so proud of myself when I get something done or cleaned out. Keep up the good work ladies. |

today I got to take my frozen huckleberries out of the freezer and made Jam. While it was still warm I made pancakes for breakfast and yummmmm. I've also pulled 2 chickens out of the freezer and tomorrow I'm going to can chicken vegetable soup and broth. Trying to clean out the chest freezer so I can defrost it. I haven't gotten any real food from the store in over a week, I just keep using what I find in the freezer and fridge.

Oh, my gosh! Thank you so much, it's like looking at my own cabinets! I need to scale down and straighten up! The oldest moved out, just 2 to go! Always excuses - but NO MORE! I'm up to the challenge! |
