Does anyone on the list have draft horses? I have a team of Percheron mares that we use to educate the public, do rides for farms around us, or putter around and enjoy them. This is my team:

I hope it is okay to post photos. And that is me driving, not many woman drive drafts...and yes, have had men comment on that..

Thanks for looking pnickols...I have LOTS of photos of my mares, one thing I am not in short supply of. We are not far from PA where we have a good mix of Amish and Mennonite folks, so when I need harness or a wheel right, as we restored a 100 year old wagon, it wasn't too far to go.

Beautiful horses. I love them. A friend up the road has a few draft horses. He has some buggies and wagons he gets them to pull every now and then. We might have to borrow them to go to town soon with the high gas prices.

My grandfather tilled the soil with draft horses. I rode one of them called "Ajax" and his teammate was a gray horse that was really mean. I was never allowed in the same corral as he was. Grandpa had two teams and alternated their use so they could rest.

Those are some beautiful mares! I love them! I don't have a draft- I have a little arabian. She would look like a foal next to your gals! :) I bet driving is fun!

It is a lot of fun to drive. We have two restoration projects in the works when it warms up some. One is a courting buggy were going to restore and fix up and should be fun to drive and the other, well, it is more of a fixer up that you can haul people around and has a 5th wheel on it so it is a bit tighter turns.

We have three Clydesdales. Rusty, Cindy and David. They are pets. I know, I know, What was wrong with a simple goldfish?! My husband brought them home, his grandfather used to use drafts to farm with and my husband thought it would be fun to try it out. That lasted exactly three times out. Now they are pets. Good life for them, and we get to enjoy their wonderful personalities! Good thing I am a horse person...............

Woohoo..great to see other draft enthusiasts...and there is nothing wrong with a "grade" Percheron, I have one registered and one grade..but they both have hearts of gold and my Dad always said, you can't ride papers! Thank you all for telling me about your wonderful critters...if you have photos..."hint-hint"

Hi Cari Lynn,I just posted a pic of the English Shires from the farm in Iowa.www.farmgirlsoftheheartland.blogspot.comClyde and Ernie. They are around 15 yrs old.  They help bring in the sap during sap season for maple syrup.  They do almost all the parades and help with the musuem during Christmas and school programs. The dog , Jake, Is ALWAYS with them when they leave the farm.  He rides in the seat!!They are always in the paper too. THey photograph so well.  There are several pairs of Belgians in the State Line Draft Horse Association and Clyde and Ernie are always the photo they print.Percherons, Belgian mule cross and on and on. They just had their 30 year anniversay plowing demonstration . It was awesome. Thanks so much for sharing. Love the girls.Attended the HUGE draft show in Manchester Iowa last summer. The ground rumbled. It was the coolest thing I have ever seen.Take care.WendeYou know your a Farm Girl when...

Love your team. I like seeing teams of draft horses, my favorite was the Budweiser Clydesdales. there is an artist who specializes in painting teams of horses, but I can't think of her name.

I have driven other people's drafts before, with help!
I am getting my Haflingers, Nomad and Lola, broke to drive in February. A local Amish man will start them, then I'll go down and learn/ help. A friend whose former team retired is selling me a full biothane teams harness with stainless steel hardware and with reins/ chains attached- for $700. It was locally made here in Texas, and is still rather new. He may have collars to sell me too, second hand- depends on fit.
I also got to join a wagon drivers/ work horse club as a friend and auditor. We will have playdays and I may get to ride along on one of those 3-5 day wagon rides they have here in Texas. Of course, there will come a day when I have a wagon and my hirse and I will be ready to go on those rides!!!
I'm pretty excited, obviously!!
Mary LD

Haflingers- You can't have just one!
( I'm just one short of a drill team!)
