So i was trimming my goats hooves today, and noticed that my doe's left teat is swollen, I stripped it out and the whole thing was full of bloody pussey liquid with chunks of what looks like white blood cells or some other icky type of chunks. I already have a vet appt. on Tuesday. Can I do anything until then? I am new to goats, so I can really use some help!!!!!

Thanks Ladies!!!

well i thought some one would have been on. these are busy days. so i shall try to help. you should milk her out as often as you can. 4 or more times a day. warm her bag with iol such as olive if you have it. what i do is rub oil on her bag then cayenne pepper on the oil. then if you can use hot packs. hot wet towels to help it move out. i know when grace sees this she will know herbs to steep for her. i am thinking grace said raspberry leaf tea is good for her to drink also. grace will know. i know there are warming herbs. keeping things moving is vital. i would help her with a little molasses water warm also. if you have it a vit b would be good. hows her appetite. how much milk are you getting from that side? hope i helped a little. there are todays you can inject also if need be. vet will know. milk her milk her out sherrye

Hey Corie. I sure hope your goat's ok. I have not hav but one doe ever with mastitis and it took a long time to get her back to normal. I used the cow mastitis meds. I think it's called Today or Tomorrow. Something like that. You put it up inside the teat a few times a day. Peppermint oil rubbed on the udders helps also.

You said she's prednant. How far along? And have you not started to dry her up? I always do that 2 months before they freshen. Mine should be kidding the last of April. I hope. I have not had a problem with drying them off yet. And I wasn't told when I first got milk goats to cut down on the feed when I was doing that. That helps alot to cut back on feed then stop with the feed. Because the more they eat, the more they make milk. Anyway, I hope she's ok. The vet's coming out Tuesday? They should be able to get it under control. Please let us know how she is. I am so sorry you haven't gotten more help with this by now. I know people are busy around here.

Kris

So this is the strange part. i have not been milking her. I recently bought her and she hasn't been bred in two years. I spoke to my vet and he thinks it is a pseudo lactation. I have been giving her penicilin and been giving her the med into the teat. Other than being mad at me I think she is ok she seems to be eating and drinkin well.
I love these forums! Thank you so much for your help!!!! You girls are the very best. i just wish I lived close to some of my farmgirl friends!!!

Hi Corie,
I hope that you have resolved the mastitis issues with your goat by now but I wanted to add a few herbal remedies that might help in the future or might offer some comfort to your goat during the healing process.
Susun Weed,an herbalist and goatkeeper advises using echinacea and poke root tincture to treat mastitis, she mixes hers as one dropperful of poke to an ounce of echinacea tincture.
Warm poultices of burdock or slippery elm are beneficial in relieving pain and inflammation in the udder,I favor the slippery elm when there is alot of inflammation because it is a very astringent herb but also very soothing,it can help draw out the pus and inflammation in the udder, just mix a small amount with hot water and apply to the affected area as often as you can for as long as you can,it tends to hold the heat and adhere fairly well to the skin.
Warm cabbage leaves will also help relieve inflammation and engorgement of the udder, dip these in boiling water very briefly and then apply to the udder while still very warm but not hot enough to burn the skin.
Sometimes after mastitis,a lump will remain in the udder,it is beneficial to gently massage it with some warm oil and warm poultice as sometimes these lumps can still contain some infection and flare up again once treatment is stopped, even for some time after so it is good to keep an eye on such remaining lumps and work towards eliminating them entirely because they are often walled up infection and after antibiotic treatment for the first round of mastitis, they can possibly contain antibiotic resistant bacteria and the returning infection can be more dificult to treat so whether I treat an infecion with conventional antibiotic therapy or herbal therapy (I most often do both) I keep very watchful over the affected area for some time after and try to support the udder with continued care to ensure that the infection does not return.
Good luck with your doe,I hope all turns out well.

Great Advise Kathryn and here are a few things I use for folks who we have watched, milked and treated.
Internally a treatment
1 Tbl Sage, 1 Tbl Garlic, 1 Tbl Southernwood, l Tbl Raspberry Leaves, 1 Tbl Herb Robert. Make into medicine balls, mix the herbs together and add molasses and enough wheat flour to make into a ball that will hold together (Slippery Elm can be used instead of wheat flour) Roll into balls and feed 2 or 3 large balls for about 2 to 3 times a day.
Externally I use 1 qt water and 1/2 cup Dock leaves. Make a strong tea. Soak sheet bandages into the tea and wrap udder and tie off with a sheet to keep the bandages in place. You can use this same tereatment for relief of congestion if applied cold to the lung area.

As for a salve I use 1 tbl Marshallow leaves and 1 tbl Comfrey leaves. Hate to almost boilding in just enough water to cover the leaves. Let stand for 210 minutes then add 1 tbl Mullein Leaves and enough Slippery Elm Powder, enough to make a paste. Apply this to the udder after milking, and leave on. This should give rapid relief. Also keep penning area very clean and a close watch on her to make sure she is not running a low grade fever. Since she is expecting that low grade fever can effect the baby and could lead to still birth or early birth.

Hope that gives you a bit more information - you received great information from the other ladies. Please keep us informed for we are all here to help. Good luck and you and your sweet one's will be in my prayers.

Hi Grace!
I will add your remedies to my livestock doctoring notebook, they will be a great addition, thank you for sharing them,I use alot of herbal treatments as opposed to conventional treatments or antibiotics though I am not opposed to conventional veterinary medicine or antibotics in the cases where they can benefit.
I use comfrey and marshmallow salves individually though have never blended the two or combined it with slippery elm so I will make some of your salve as well.

Ladies!!!

Thank you so much for all the great remedies. I spoke to the vet today when we got our ultrasounds done (both are open:( ) and he told me to just leave her for now and let it subside on its own. He said since it is a pseudo lactation it is not mastitis. So now I guess I will just sock all the WONDERFUL cures for a later date!!

P.S.
Anyone want to buy a couple of open Nubian does? :) No really if you do I know where there are some really nice girls!!

Take care ladies! Thank you so much!!
