Weird. Last week we were visiting my parents in another state and went hiking. While we were at the park hiking someone smashed in our car window and took my purse. They'd also done the same to someone else's car/purse in another row of cars. We got our cards cancelled and window repaired. We got home okay and then went to the bank and got that taken care of; I'll go to Motor Vehicles tomorrow to get a new license.
The rational part of my brain says it's stuff, just stuff, get over it; but I still have a sick-ish feeling in my gut. I usually am ruled by my rational side--this gut stuff is no fun.
Just typing to get it out, I guess. Yuck. I'm sure within a few days I'll be back to peaceful life :) haha :) |

Having things stolen is about more than the stuff. It leaves a feeling of vulnerability. Sorry for your loss.

Oh, I'm so sorry you're going through this, Sheila. What you're feeling is very normal and it's totally unfair. Someone violated your trust about the safety of the world around you, and this person not only destroyed your property, they took very personal belongings which included your personal information - of course you're going to feel yucky inside! That probably totally rocked your world to return and find your car like that! A few years back our car was vandalized along with those of our neighbors by a prankster who thought shooting paintballs at the cars along either side of our street was a great way to blow off steam and get his jollies. My son was a little one at the time, and I was home alone with him all day. I was absolutely freaked out for weeks about going outside or seeing anyone walking on the sidewalks. Even though it was beautiful weather outside, I stayed inside, doors bolted, windows locked and shades drawn. Just knowing that some psycho looneytunes nutcase was out there riding around loose in our neighborhoods really seized me with fear. I can't even imagine how you must feel with everything that happened to you! In time, it gets better, though. You just need a little time to reset and regain your footing. It's hard to stay rational when something so irrational and senseless happens to you. In time, though, as you're able to re-establish your feelings of safety, you'll be better able to put it into perspective. This was an isolated incident, albeit an awful one. Feel confident and secure in the knowledge that God was watching over and protecting you - thank the Lord nobody was hurt. I just really hope they catch the thief, not only in the hopes that you receive restitution, but also because I'm sure it will help ease your mind to know this now nameless, faceless coward can't ever bother you again. Sheila . . .yes it is stuff. However, it IS a crime and it IS stepping over the line and it IS an invasion.
We have been the victims of burlary (twice in our home) when we lived in Phoenix. The idea of someone else in my house with CRIMINAL INTENT is very unsettling.
Just a couple years ago my car was broken into in Phoenix while it was parked in airport parking. Nothing of GREAT value was taken because I had it with me. But some things were taken and the windows that were busted out were the MOST EXPENSIVE ones to replace. Again, it WAS a CRIME and the individuals who did that had CRIMINAL INTENT . . and that is disturbing and unsettling.
I'm sorry you're dealing with that . . . and I pray that things will get taken care of soon. And that, by some miracle, you'll get your purse back. That can happen.

I understand what you mean. It just creeps you out to think that someone would break into your car or house and steal things from you. It is a feeling of being violated. It takes away some trust and makes you doubt things more I think. Everyone I know that has had this happen has felt this way. You are not alone.

I have had my car broken into several times, our workshop once, and our rental house once. I believe that the best term to describe what you feel is "violated". After my workshop (in my backyard) got broken into, I was pretty neurotic for a week. Then I got angry. Really angry. I put up a game cam and formed a neighborhood watch. I realized that more than likely, it was some teenage punks down the street. Interestingly enough, after I sent the police their way, they MOVED. I mean, within days.
Never got any of my stuff back, but some of the best advice I got from the police is DON'T ADVERTISE YOUR STUFF. That is, put ANYTHING of value out of sight. They knew what was in my workshop because there was an uncovered window facing the alley...so they just went windowshopping. They knew what was in my car, because I left the face on the radio and the CD case out.
Odds are, especially with a car, that if they can't see what's in it, they won't bother it. Not always true, of course, but the odds are in your favor of crooks leaving it alone. When I do leave the purse in the car, it is crammed out of sight under a seat or covered with a blanket in the floorboard.
I totally sympathize with you.
Another thing...when you buy big ticket items like a new TV or computer, etc. is do NOT leave the box out on the curb where thieves can see it. Once again, that's just advertising what's in your house to bad people.
