My 2011 challenge is to start reading the whole bible. Both the New Testament and the Old Testament. I have been wanting to do this for a long time but as you all know, life gets super busy,And it got put further down my to do list. I thought I would post this here in case there was someone else who has wanted to do this for a long time and wanted to do it with me. Time is not an issue for me. I don't care if it takes me 5 months, 2 years to finish reading the bible. I don't want to rush through it. I want to have a deeper relationship with God and I think this is a great way to do it. If you would like, please join me! If not that's fine too. I am going to be starting in Genesis, but you can start where ever you want. If you want to start in the New Testament or Old Testament or just read in the New Testament that is a ok. If you do want to join me I thought it would be fun to share what verses/chapters we read, and if there was a verse that really spoke to you or stood out to you that you really liked. Anyone can do this; it doesn't matter if you're Christian, Jewish, Catholic, etc. It's open to anyone who would like to have a more personal relation ship with God. And remember; go at your own pace. If you can only read a few verses one day and a few chapters the next that's fine. It could take me a couple of years to finish reading it but at least I have started.
Hugs,
Hannah

I decided to read the bible in a literal wording way. I say a baptist preacher once who said to really read the bible like you would a text book. Taking exactly what it says and not looking for 'hidden' meaning. I had to read genisis 2 times to believe what I was reading was real. It opened my eyes to a whole new world. I kept a book for verses that seemed to be 'out of place', and there are quite a lot that seem to not go with the story. As you go along quite a lot of those verses fit in with other stories and then you understand what they meant to the original stories!

I had a ball, but didn't get very far. I think I should start agian. I would love to try it agian. I still remember be completely fascinated with the creation and fall of man. I read that part over and over agian!

When do you want to start? I am so busy gettin ready for christmas I may not be able to start till after. Do you want us to post our readings and observations in this thread or email each other? I think it sounds like fun!

I'm planning on purchasing a 365 day Chronological Bible to use in 2011.

I think it would be great to discuss our readings here!

I am reading the New Testament in a year. I found a reading plan for the whole bible that is a two year plan. It has small sections but that allows you to think over it and pray with it. So that is what I am doing along with memorizing two verses a month.

Angela, Me too! I kept reading, and then re-reading. I thought it would be fun to start the first week in January. I was thinking we could post it on here but we could e-mail eachother too. What ever you want to do. :)

Deb, I'm so glad you are going to do it with me!

Tammy, That is a really good idea of memorizing two verses a month. I think I will try that too! Are you going to join into?! :)

Thanks girls so much!!

I think I'd like to join you ladies. I have a study Bible that is the Inspirational Study Bible by Max Lucado and its a New Centry version. I love this one becuase it has sort of life notes on the side - helps you to take what you read and apply it to everyday life. I like the ease and the clarity of this Bible. It make daily reading fast so that I can read it, understand it and apply it to my everyday life. I am looking forward to developing a deeper faith this year.

I have the Bible in a year that I keep trying to get through. Maybe with a little prodding and encouragement I will make. I usually get through to about October and then things happen and I don't know why. This Bible has readings from the Old Testament, New Testament and the Psalms and Proverbs in one day's reading. Anyone else have one of these or is there a method to this madness?

See how many pages your Bible has and divide it by 365 or 313 if you want to give yourself a day off a week. The would have you start at Gen and end at Rev. The next is to read by chapters and probably how I will take on this challenge this year. There are 1189 chapters in the good book so divide that by 365 and you will get 3.25. Again if you are going to give yourself a day off use the majic 313 number and you will need to read 3.8 chapters a day (some longer than others). The last way probably gives you the most flexibility. There are 66 books in the Bible if you read 5.5 books per month you are good to go. You can read as many or as few pages a day as you like and you can read the books in any order you choose. Dad is a minister who does talk radio but I found the information on eHow because I wanted all the options. I hope you find this helpful.

Hannah,
I read through mine every year. I normally always start in the New Testament then go back to the Old testament, I read at least one chapter a day if I want to read more than one chapter I do but never less. I normally find that I finish before the years end. I think I am going to find a good devotional that is set up for a reading for the year and do that this coming year. What a great way to enjoy a year! Blessings,Karen

I decided to read the Bible this year instead of spending so much time reading fiction. I am a voracious reader and read very fast, but somehow that never seemed to transfer to the Bible. I always feel like I should be reading for content. So, the first time through I read it backwards. And when I got tired of the NT, I started at the end of the OT and read backward for a while. By book, in case any of you think I'm reading each verse backwards! When I finished that, I tried to read from the shortest book in each testament to the longest. I got stalled about 3/4 of the way through that one. So I went back to reading it backwards. It gives a new perspective on many of the events in the OT becasue you read about them after they happened and see the fallout and then the next book gives the accounting of the event.

I borrowed a NKJ version Bible from our church library. Chronological. Test driving before I buy my own. I prefer NIV, but NKJ is ok for now.

I prefer the NKJ version. Some of the other version have come under some fire and developed some controversy. I know my Mom had a version that was on the news a few years back because it stated that David had killed Goliath's brother, not Goliath. It even had a note in the margian that said it was unrealistic to expect such a small person to fight such a large person. One of the newer versions says in the margins of the creation story that the word day means millions of years and so the have changed that word to it's proper meaning.

I prefer to stick as close as possible to the original. My nephew is in college to be a preacher and is learning hebrew this year. He will spend 2 years on hebrew the 2 years on aramaic. He is gonna buy some of the used text books and flash cards and study materials at the end of each year for me. I will have all the study stuff to start workin on teachin myself to read the original version, even a family tutor!

My Church has a 'check off list' for their "Read the Bible in a Year" plan. It's non-denominational and it doesn't matter what version of the Bible you read. http://www.highlandhope.org/ Click on "Growing Deeper" and then "2010 Bible Reading Plan". You can print out your 'reading list' and keep it in your Bible. I've found that it helps when you have some time to kill in the dr. office or waiting for practice to get over.

I found a purse at a local bible bookstore that has a bible carrier attached to the back of it. There were also some that had the bible carrier on the bottom. I liked the one with it on the back cause it had more pockets. This might be a good christmas present for youself. That's what I called it! LOL!

I am so glad I loaded the bible on my E reader. I still have my copy that I keep in my car but I seem to run short on time in the mornings. I think the longer the winter the slower I get in the AM- But I am able to get caught up at lunch time. It is so good to be back reading the good book. I'd forgotten how uplifting these daily doses are...and somehow on most days there seems to be a message for me almost directly...I hope you are enjoying it as much as I am.
